Google has confirmed in an official blog post that it's killing Google Assistant on most devices later this year. All the Android devices with Android 10 and above and 2 GB+ RAM will switch to Gemini and no longer have the option to use the Assistant. The inherent switch is all thanks to the number of features Gemini on Android has gained since its launch. It supports various app extensions like Google Workspace, WhatsApp, Spotify, YouTube/Music, and many utilities. Google also rolled out Gemini Live on the app for a natural conversation feel, and will be rolling out more in the coming months.

With version 1.2025.070, the “Default digital assistant app” page in the Settings app shows ChatGPT as one of the options. All you need to do is select ChatGPT to set it as your default assistant. Besides, you can also assign the long-press power button shortcut to ChatGPT for easy access. The feature might not be rolling out to all Beta users, though, as using the latest Beta, we couldn't see the option in settings. The overlay bubble clearly needs some polish as the animations are still far off from what Gemini or Perplexity offer.

Google has officially started to roll out its Gemini Android app. However, it is currently limited to US users, and if you are not from the US, you will need to make a US Google account. Once you make it, you will be able to find the app listed on Play Store. Now, to set the Gemini AI as your primary voice assistant, open the Gemini app -> tap on Get started -> select I agree. That should automatically set it as your voice assistant. However, if you want to switch between Gemini and Google Assistant, open the Gemini app -> tap on profile icon -> Settings -> Digital assistants from Google -> select the desired assistant.
