I use Skype on my computer as a land line. I have a Skype number that I can give people so they can call me from their land lines or cell phones and it rings into my Skype app on my computer. Many other services have the other features, but I have yet to find a service that includes a phone number. I don’t have a smart phone and my voice calls only prepaid cell phone is mostly turned off. I only use it when I go out, and I can forward my Skype inbound calls to my cell. Does anyone know of a service that includes a phone number?
Robert, I too have a skype number …use it for business.. I’m so fed up with microsoft trying to shove their “solutions” down my throat… they may have an overall picture of how people work… and they are trying to shove everyone into THEIR picture… I also use skype to provide support to people …

I took the time to research some of the other services – WhatsApp, Line, Signal, and Viber – looking for end to end encryption only to find out there are many questions about E2EE like backdoors, etc. They all require you to have a smart phone in order to load a desktop version. The only one that I can set up the way I work with Skype is Line with only a few annoyances. But the main issue for me is there is no calling land lines and cell phones subscription plan like Skype and there is no online number like Skype. That said, Viber does have a reasonable calling subscription to the US, but doesn’t include Canada. I wrote up a long list of functions I would like to see in Viber including an online number, and told them of the classic desktop Skype users revolt and mentioned if they could implement those changes including the online number they could get many of Skype’s customers.
in the meantime, Microsoft got the message and removed their threat to kill classic Skype on September 1, and are now working to add Classic functions to the new V8. Also I found out the Microsoft is testing E2EE in the new version 8 Skype, so hopefully it will all come together. I only have two complaints about classic Skype – lack of end to end encryption E2EE and that I can’t receive a text message from a land line or cell phone. Plus the key for me to move to another service is the calling subscription and online number, which can be ported away from Skype.

I tried to send my Partner a Private Message and as it is sending it is also sending to You Tube, I dont want my Private messages on You Tube but there is NO option to Block the upload to You Tube.
ooVoo , says they have less drop outs than Skype , My Partner and I have experienced MORE drop outs, More Cam Freezing, Sound Distortions , talking to my Partner , her voice was so deep It sounded like a Guy was talking to me.
