Do you know of a block family that includes blocks of all colors, which also don’t contain too busy or vibrant textures? If you don’t, you’re in the right place. That’s a topic of our guide today — terracotta. The terracotta blocks are frequently used building blocks that fit well in every style and block pallet. Thankfully, you can produce terracotta yourself, but you may also find it in your world. So with that said, let’s see how exactly you can obtain terracotta in Minecraft.

Resources You Need to Craft Terracotta

To make terracotta, we need to smelt clay blocks. So, the resources we are going to need are:

  • Clay Blocks
  • Furnace
  • Fuel (any)

You can obtain clay blocks with a silk touch tool, preferably a shovel. Those blocks are generated in bodies of water throughout Minecraft biomes. The places where you should first look for clay are the swamps and also lush caves, as they are covered with clay blocks. If you don’t have silk touch Minecraft enchantment, you can craft a single clay block with 4 clay balls on the crafting table.

How to Use Terracotta in Minecraft

Terracotta blocks have mostly aesthetic uses when it comes to building in Minecraft. However, as of Minecraft 1.20, it has received a new and rather important crafting function.

Terracotta and all of its variants are mainly utilized in the building aspect of this blocky game. Its colors are not overly bright and vibrant, and that’s exactly why they’re so popular. It’s far easier to combine terracotta blocks with neutral-colored blocks than, let’s say concrete blocks.

Moreover, with all the different colors and patterns terracotta blocks provide, players have many opportunities to use them in all sorts of styles and themes. We unfortunately still don’t have slabs, stairs, or walls for these colorful blocks, but that can change in the Minecraft 1.21 update.

Minecraft 1.20 update has also introduced armor trim smithing templates, cool and rare items that allow you to customize your armor. From plenty of unique patterns and colors, you can create some amazing-looking armor that will let you stand out on your server.

Armor trims are rare and sometimes extremely hard to find, so you can duplicate them. The regular terracotta block is the chosen block in the crafting recipe for four armor trims. Those are:

  • Host Armor Trim Smithing Template
  • Wayfinder Armor Trim Smithing Template
  • Raiser Armor Trim Smithing Template
  • Shaper Armor Trim Smithing Template
You can place any of the listed armor trims instead of the Wayfinder one.

This is the end of our guide about how to get terracotta and its colored/glazed variants in Minecraft. Terracotta is one of the most popular building blocks besides stone and wood variants.

So, if you have just started to learn about building, trying out terracotta can only make you a better builder. With that said, what is your favorite terracotta variant, regular, colored, or well, the glazed terracotta? Tell us in the comments below!

Can you make terracotta bricks?

No, it’s not possible to make terracotta bricks. Currently, it’s not even possible to make terracotta slabs and stairs, but if they get introduced, terracotta bricks have a chance to get added as well.

Can you farm terracotta?

Yes, you could farm terracotta, but it can be quite time-consuming to make all the farm pieces. First, you’d need a moss farm to produce moss blocks. Then, when you grow giant spruce trees on top of moss, those blocks will turn into podzol, which you can use a hoe on to turn into farmland.

If the farmland is not hydrated, it’ll turn into dirt. You can then build a dirt into mud convertor, which will produce mud that you can then place over pointed dripstone to dry it. After that, the mud will turn into clay that you can smelt in a furnace to get terracotta. This is not a completely automatic process, but it will allow you to create terracotta out of basically nothing.
