Mojang Studios officially announced Minecraft Dungeons 2 during the first Minecraft Live of 2026. This sequel to Minecraft’s dungeon-crawling spin-off came as a surprise, especially since the studio ended support for the first Dungeons game in September 2023. It seems Mojang wanted to double down and focus all its resources on the sequel’s development at the time.
Now, with the cat out of the bag, everyone’s wondering, when is Minecraft Dungeons 2 releasing? What will the gameplay be like? To answer all that and more, follow this comprehensive Minecraft Dungeons 2 roundup, which covers everything from the release window and platforms to plot leaks and more.
Minecraft Dungeons 2 Release Date (Expected)
In the announcement video, Mojang confirmed that Minecraft Dungeons 2 will release in Fall 2026. We don’t have an exact release date yet, but the developers have hinted that more details will be shared gradually throughout the year.

With the Minecraft Chaos Cubed update releasing around June 2026, we can expect a September-November 2026 release window for Dungeons 2. I believe it will arrive before November or late December to avoid clashing with the GTA 6 release date. And if Mojang did that, it wouldn’t be the only studio looking to avoid getting steamrolled by the GTA hype. Check out the 2026 video games release calendar to see when other new games are avoiding Jason and Lucia.
What Platforms Will Minecraft Dungeons 2 Release On?
Minecraft Dungeons 2 will be released on the following platforms, as listed below:
- Windows PC
- Xbox Series X/S
- PlayStation 5
- Nintendo Switch and Switch 2
- Game Pass
Similar to its predecessor, Minecraft Dungeons 2 remains inclusive to all platforms. Although there is still no confirmation about cross-platform support, it will likely be present, looking at the trends of modern sandbox or dungeon-crawler games.
Minecraft Dungeons 2 Story and What to Expect
The official Minecraft Dungeons 2 trailer was revealed alongside the first thread of Chaos Cubed update details. It hints at a mysterious rising threat after a peaceful era. It is a classic setup, and we’re familiar with this story ever since the Minecraft movie was released.
Beyond these hints, one of the main focuses of the trailer is on the Sculk blocks and the Deep Dark biome. In the trailer, the Sculk spreads aggressively, infecting caves and indicating that something powerful and beyond control has arrived.
Then the camera focuses on the Ancient City, moving on to the Minecraft Ancient City portal that activates for just a few seconds. This is a huge lore hint, suggesting a new dimension, and the story may expand beyond the overworld. And Mojang, being sneaky like always, included a hidden QR code in the Minecraft Dungeons 2 trailer.
The Hidden Minecraft Dungeons 2 Video
This small QR code appears for a split second at the 0:13 timestamp in the Dungeons 2 trailer. If you scan this QR code, it leads you to a hidden Minecraft website link with an unlisted video. When you play this video, you see a strange creature, looking similar to the Warden, singing with flashing lights in the background.
Now the creature in the video and the flashing lights aren’t the only things worth highlighting. The secret link’s page name and the letters in the video title aren’t random. They are linked and reveal something interesting.
If you use a hex string converter, the numbers 0x7370696365776f6f64 in the page title translate to “spicewood.” The title of this video, “TJG KIF RDE LSRD,” is also a cypher, and when you decode it using spicewood as the key, it decodes to “Unlock the path“.
Moreover, the background lights up with notes of different colors. When you play the same sound on a Minecraft note block in the backward order, the output is B(05), F(11), and A(15) notes. And if you convert the note block colors from the official Minecraft Dungeons 2 trailer, it gives the string EFGBDGAC.
These Minecraft Dungeons 2 leaks and official reveals are more than speculations. We can expect more details to be announced by Mojang in upcoming Minecraft Live events ahead of the game’s release.
Until then, here is the game’s description from the official trailer. See if you can gather any more hints from the description, and let us know if you do in the comments below.

Why is Mojang Making Minecraft Dungeons 2: What Happened to OG Dungeons Game?
When Minecraft Dungeons first launched in 2020, it was an instant success and amassed over 25 million players within a short time. The game was simple and had a fun co-op system. Moreover, due to the easy-to-learn features and visually appealing graphics, Minecraft Dungeons was perfect for casual gamers.
Despite its success, there were a ton of limitations as the game lacked endgame content. Players complained that the gameplay was repetitive, and it had a paid DLC update format. The seasonal updates didn’t solve the issue at hand, and thereby led to a declining player base.

Over time, Mojang confirmed that Minecraft Dungeons had reached the planned conclusion and was never meant to be a long-term, live service title. Despite a few problems, many players were disappointed when the development and support for the game ended.
After over two years, the massive success of the original Dungeons game has led to the reveal of a sequel, and the community is thrilled. But they are also up in arms due to the Ancient City Portal becoming functional in Dungeons 2 instead of the main game. We hope Mojang has learned from the shortcomings of the first installment and expect Minecraft Dungeons 2 to be a bigger success.
