How to Get and Repair Trident in Minecraft

In Short
  • Trident is a Minecraft weapon that players can get by killing Drowned mobs and looting vaults in trial chambers.
  • Players can repair the Trident with the mending enchantment or by combining two Tridents in an anvil.
  • Tridents can be used as melee or ranged weapons, and there are several enchantments you can put on them.

Among all the weapons in Minecraft, the Trident is the most special one. Not only is the process to obtain a Trident unique, but the weapon has extraordinary properties and exclusive enchantments that help make it more powerful. So, if you want to learn how to get a Trident in Minecraft, you have come to the right place. We include all the methods to obtain the Trident, along with the process to repair it when it loses durability.

How to Get a Trident in Minecraft

If you’re wondering how to get a Trident in Minecraft Java, the answer isn’t simple because you can’t get it through crafting.

Instead, the first method sees you kill the Drowned, while the second method requires you to loot vaults in Minecraft Trial Chambers. That said, let’s look at how each of these methods works:

Killing Drowned

The easiest way to get the Trident weapon in Minecraft is by hunting the Drowned mobs. Drowned are hostile Minecraft mobs that spawn in light level 0 inside all ocean biomes, rivers, and dripstone caves.

These aquatic hostile mobs rarely spawn with a Trident. To be exact, the chances of them spawning with a Trident are 6.25% (1 in 16 Drowned) in the Java edition, and 15% (3 in 20 Drowned) in the Bedrock edition. After you carefully manage to kill the Trident-wielding Drowned, they will have a chance to drop the Trident beside their usual drops.

The drop chance is where the two Minecraft editions differ drastically. In the Java edition, you have only an 8.5% chance of obtaining a Trident from a Drowned. The Bedrock edition, however, gives you better chances: 25% chance. Looting enchantment does help with these odds, giving you 11.5% on Java and a 37% chance on Bedrock with Looting III.

Yes, this does seem kind of crazy. However, that’s not all. It’s possible to “trade” with a Drowned holding a Trident in Bedrock. If they aren’t attacking at the moment, you can give them a nautilus shell, and they will let go of the Trident to pick up the other item, giving you a Trident with full durability.

So if you’re playing on the Bedrock edition, you will have far less trouble getting a Trident than on the Java edition. Moreover, to clear any confusion, zombies converted into drowned never spawn with a Trident, so you cannot farm them that easily. You cannot pick up the Trident that Drowned threw at you either.

Looting Vaults

The second method to get a Trident in Minecraft was added in the Tricky Trails update. There is a slim chance (2.1%) that the Minecraft vault will eject a Trident once you unlock it with a trial key. This process is more dangerous than killing the Drowned, and honestly, it’s also worse in terms of chances.

However, if you are already in trial chambers looking for good loot and unlocking vaults or ominous vaults, this may be a fun way of getting a Trident, instead of a boring grind for the Drowned.

How to Repair Trident in Minecraft

When you finally get your Trident, it will most likely be pretty damaged. So, to use it, you will first need to repair it.

But, how do you do that?

The three primary methods to repair a Trident include using the mending enchantment, repairing it with another Trident using the anvil in Minecraft, or using a crafting table. Here are all the methods explained in detail:

Using the Mending Enchantment

Well, you are going to need the mending enchanted book to repair a Trident. There is no item you can combine with a Trident in an anvil to repair it, like diamonds or iron.

The only option left is to enchant the Trident with mending. You can’t get mending through the enchanting table. Instead, you will need to trade with librarian villagers, do some fishing, or loot structures. When you do so, you’ll need to apply it to the Trident inside the anvil. Then, you can repair the Trident in Minecraft.

Hold the Trident in the off-hand and use bottles of enchanting or your sword to kill any mobs and get XP. You can trade with villagers and obtain XP that way. If you want to build the best Minecraft farms to gain XP, then our linked guide will get you started.

Repairing with Another Trident Using Anvil

If you have two Tridents with low durability, you can combine them in the anvil. This method preserves the mending enchantment that you can apply to other tools or weapons, such as the sword, bow, or your shield.

Moreover, the durability and the enchantments on both the Tridents are combined into a single one, and so you would get a weapon with increased durability and stronger abilities. However, it will cost you experience levels.

Repairing Trident Using Crafting Table

Now, if you don’t want to spend any experience levels in combining two Tridents, consider using the crafting table in Minecraft. Simply place the table on the ground and right-click on it to open the UI.

Then, you can place the two damaged Tridents side by side on the cells to restore the durability and get a new one on the right. However, this method removes any Minecraft Trident enchantments on either of them.

How to Use a Trident in Minecraft

You can use a Trident as a melee and ranged weapon. Similar to a sword or axe, get near a mob and right-click or use the secondary action button to hurt them up close.

If you want to throw your Trident at something, hold the right-click, aim, and let go. This will launch the weapon in the direction you were looking. But keep in mind you’ll need to pick up the Trident if you haven’t enchanted it with Loyalty yet. So, don’t throw it somewhere you can’t reach it, especially the void, as you won’t be able to retrieve it anymore.

So, how long did it take for you to get your first Trident? Were you lucky and the first drowned dropped it, or did you grind for hours before obtaining it? Share your experience with us in the comment section below!

Can you make a Trident?

No, you cannot craft a Trident but only get it rarely by killing Trident-wielding drowned and looting vaults.

How do you get a Trident fast?

To get the Trident fast, you can explore oceans in search of ocean ruins where you’ll definitely find drowned. Then, explore dripstone caves, as they have a higher rate of drowned spawning. In addition to that, rivers also have a higher rate of drowned spawning, so exploring dark parts of rivers or underwater caves will make you more likely to find a drowned with a Trident.

Is Trident better than a bow?

Considering how difficult it is to get a Trident and how a bow can be super powerful with good enchantments, I’d say no, a Trident is not better than a bow.
