We have separated this section into subsections showcasing the wolf variant’s name, appearance, and their spawn location.

1. Pale Wolf

Pale wolf or the regular wolf is the variant we’re all very familiar with. Its coat is mostly white with some darker details. However, it doesn’t spawn just anywhere. You may only find this puppy in the taiga Minecraft biomes. It’ll spawn in a default pack size of four.

2. Woods Wolf

Woods wolf is the most common wolf variant in the game. It has a mostly dark brown coat with all legs covered with cream-colored socks. They spawn in the regular forest biomes.

3. Ashen Wolf

4. Black Wolf

The black wolf is pretty much completely black. It spawns in the old growth pine taiga, where giant spruce trees have leaves only at the top. These wolves appear in smaller packs of 2-4.

5. Chestnut Wolf

The chestnut wolf has a cream-like colored coat with certain darker spots, as well as the face, paws, and tails being significantly darker. You will find this wolf variant in the old growth spruce taiga biome, where giant spruce trees have leaves covering much more of the trunk than in the old growth pine taiga biome. They also spawn in smaller packs of 2-4.

6. Rusty Wolf

The rusty wolf is a beautiful wolf variant with an orange-reddish coat and white ears, snout, and paws. You can find this wolf in the packs of 2-4 and only in the sparse jungle biomes.

7. Spotted Wolf

  • Location: Savanna Plateau

The spotted wolf is the most unique wolf variant. Its coat has a mix of blue, orange, and white colors, with the face being blue and the legs and tail being orange and white. This wolf variant is also kind of rare due to the fact it spawns only in the savanna plateau biome. However, their packs are larger and consist of 4-8 wolves.

8. Striped Wolf

Striped wolf
  • Location: Wooded Badlands

The striped wolf has a bright cream and yellowish coat with lots of darker stripes across the body. The face, paws, and tail are also darker in color. These hyena-like wolves spawn in the wooded badlands biome in the packs of 4-8 wolves.

9. Snowy Wolf

  • Location: Grove biome

Finally, we have the snowy wolf. This Minecraft wolf variant has a white coat with some purplish and blueish details. It spawns in the grove biome, and unlike other wolves, it’s far rarer since it spawns alone.

How to Tame a Wolf

The process to tame a wolf is the same for every variant, and it’s really simple. You need to walk up to a wild wolf and use bones on it. Each of the bones has about a 33% chance of taming a wolf, so the number of bones needed is random. We have a dedicated guide on taming a wolf that explains the entire process in depth.

How to Breed Wolves

Breeding animals in Minecraft allows you to duplicate them for various purposes. To breed wolves, you’ll need any type of meat, both cooked or raw. Rotten flesh and raw chicken also work and don’t cause any negative effects. You may breed two of your tamed wolves at full health by using meat on them in Minecraft.

They will display heart particles above them and will get close to each other. After a couple of seconds, a new baby wolf will appear with a collar equipped. If you’re breeding two of the same wolf variants, the baby wolf will be the same. However, if you breed two different variants, the new baby wolf will adopt the appearance of one of the parents.

If you breed tamed wolves that belong to another player, the baby wolf will also follow the original owner. Breeding two dogs with different owners will randomly assign the pup to one of the owners.

How to Use Wolf Armor

If you’re planning to use wolves a lot, then having wolf armor is a necessity for your doggo army. To make wolf armor, you need six armadillo scutes and a crafting table. We’ve linked dedicated guides on the matter, so check them out for more details.

Once you make the wolf armor, walk up to a tamed wolf and use this item on it. It’ll automatically get equipped. This armor will absorb damage from most sources and lose durability over time. The state of the wolf armor is indicated by the cracks in the armor’s texture. More cracks mean more damage absorbed, which means less durability. Luckily, you can repair the wolf armor using armadillo scutes on a tamed wolf with the damaged wolf armor.

You can only remove the wolf armor from the wolf by using shears on it. This will only work if you own the dog. Moreover, you can dye wolf armor in many different colors, similar to leather armor.

Now you know where to find each of the wolf variants in Minecraft, how to tame them, and how to use wolf armor.
