Remedy Entertainment’s latest half-year financial report, published on August 11, 2026, has offered an update on the Max Payne 1 & 2 remake, and it’s a disappointing one.
According to Remedy’s report, which also revealed Control Resonant is among one of the top pre-ordered PS5 games in the US, the studio said that they cannot talk about the Max Payne remakes, despite being in full production since August 2025.
Remedy’s speakers acknowledged public questions in the half-yearly financial report about updates regarding the Max Payne 1 & 2 remake, and here’s what they had to say:
“There’s a lot of questions concerning Max Payne; on that game, Rockstar Games is handling the publishing side, so we can’t comment on those questions.”
It’s an underwhelming update but not a surprising one. Rockstar currently owns the Max Payne IP, as Remedy sold it to Take-Two back in 2002. So, Remedy isn’t self-publishing the remakes, unlike their next major title, Control Resonant, releasing September 24, 2026.
Speaking of the Control sequel, Remedy’s half-year financial report also notes that pre-orders for Control Resonant have been healthy and the game has already garnered 1.5 million wishlists. So, it’s natural that Remedy isn’t concerned with the Max Payne 1 & 2 remake just yet.
On the other hand, Rockstar is gearing up for the biggest entertainment release of the decade with GTA 6, releasing on November 19. However, after GTA 6 releases, you can expect Rockstar to share an update on the neo-noir remakes.
The bad news is that if Remedy and Rockstar release the remakes after January 2028, then the game won’t receive a PlayStation disc like Control Resonant. Recently, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick embraced GTA 6’s digital-only approach in the company’s August 7 earnings call.
A physical disc release seems very unlikely if the Max Payne 1 & 2 remake launches in 2028. At most, players will be able to purchase a PlayStation code-in-the-box. So, it’s completely up to Rockstar when they reveal more information about the remakes next.
