Honkai Star Rail has a huge universe filled with rich and exciting characters. Hoyoverse expands on this universe with new characters in every Honkai Star Rail update. This includes both playable and non-playable characters. Every HSR character follows a specific path, features an element type, and is part of a faction.

How to Get Characters in Honkai Star Rail
There are five different and easy ways to obtain characters in Honkai Star Rail— Banners (Warp), Story Progression, Events, Game Modes, and Shop.
1. Banners
The primary way to unlock characters in Honkai Star Rail is through Banners, also known as Warps. There are primarily two types of banners in the game, limited and permanent.
The limited banners change every version, while the permanent banner remains the same. To obtain characters from the banners, you have to use the Star Rail Special Passes or Star Rail Passes currencies.
The Star Rail Special Pass is the limited banner currency, while the Star Rail Pass is the permanent banner currency. You can exchange Stellar Jades (also obtainable via Honkai Star Rail codes) to get either currency, or get them through events or from the shop. Each pass costs 160 Stellar Jades.
One thing that I would like to mention here is that the limited characters can only be obtained from limited banners, while the permanent characters can be obtained from either of the banners.
2. Story Progression
Some of the characters in Honkai Star Rail are unlocked for free after progressing the story. All you need to do is play the Trailblaze missions, and eventually, you will unlock characters like Hunt March 7th, Remembrance Trailblazer, Harmony Trailblazer, and more. Hoyoverse will likely add more unlockable characters through story progression later down the line.
3. Events
Certain Honkai Star Rail events also reward free characters, although most of them are 4-star characters. However, Hoyoverse has also gifted free 5-star characters through limited events.
Even the 4-star characters obtainable through the events can have good options. Characters such as Gallagher, Pela, and Tingyun often appear as free rewards, and they are really strong in the game.
4. Game Modes
The game also rewards free characters for progressing through the end-game modes. The Simulated Universe rewards players with four free copies of Herta. Similarly, progressing the Pure Fiction and Apocalyptic Shadow game modes will reward players with one copy of Lynx and Xueyi.
5. Shop
Finally, you can also buy characters from the Honkai Star Rail shop. The Starlight currency can be used to obtain 4-star characters from the Starlight Exchange shop. You can obtain Starlight by getting more than one copy of the same character.
