A new report suggests that Project Sirius, the multiplayer spin-off set in The Witcher universe, has been hit with another round of layoffs. According to Kotaku, developer The Molasses Flood, a studio acquired by CD Projekt Red in 2021, has reportedly implemented a shift in its development strategy, leading to the team losing 18 members.
Sirius was originally announced in 2022, with the project being pitched as a new take on The Witcher franchise, blending The Witcher’s single-player elements with multiplayer components. However, it has had a rocky road ever since its original announcement.
The project faced a major crisis in early 2023 when CD Projekt Red’s re-evaluation of its scope led to a complete development restart under a “new framework.” This, in turn, caused 26 layoffs at The Molasses Flood. After the 2023 overhaul, The Molasses Flood went relatively quiet regarding Project Sirius. However, the team did show signs of life, including hiring Destiny 2 writer Kwan Perng as lead writer.
Despite these creative changes to The Witcher spin-off, the studio behind Project Sirius has been struck by internal restructuring once again. Another nine individuals have been let go from the team, with an additional nine staff members being transitioned to alternative projects.
While Project Sirius is facing some hurdles, it is not the only The Witcher project that CD Projekt Red has in development. The company is currently working on unveiling The Witcher 3: Songs of the Past at Gamescom 2026 while also continuing development of The Witcher 4. On top of all this, developer Fool’s Theory is also developing a full remake of the original Witcher.
It is unknown when players will get their first look at The Witcher spin-off Project Sirius, especially since the new round of layoffs will further complicate things. Fans can hope that the project sails along smoothly, as the prospect of a multiplayer title set within The Witcher universe feels too good to pass up.
