How to Make Smooth Stone in Minecraft

Some blocks in Minecraft have rather chaotic and rough textures. They can be perfect in certain scenarios to bring contrast to the build or draw attention to an important centerpiece. On the opposite end, there are numerous blocks with light and uniform textures, allowing you to add some simplicity to their house builds. There’s even a whole group of “polished blocks” that make the original textures a bit cleaner and easier to work with. We will talk about one such block, the smooth stone block.

So, in this guide, we have explained how to make smooth stone and how to use it in Minecraft. We have also listed the locations where you can find smooth stone in the game. Use the table below to navigate the article.

What is smooth stone?

Smooth stone is a nice and clean building block. It’s lighter in color than the regular stone block and also includes a fairly distinctive border on the edges. To obtain it, you can smelt stone in a Minecraft furnace and that’s the most reliable way. Its primary use is in building, providing only smooth stone slabs as a variant.

Items You Need to Make Smooth Stone

In order to make smooth stone in Minecraft, you will need the following resources:

  • Stone Block
  • Furnace
  • Fuel (of your choice)

Stone is a block naturally generated beneath the surface, but it can also make up the surface of some Minecraft biomes. It is an abundant resource, so you can locate it easily. The best way to acquire stone is by the silk touch Minecraft enchantment. If you are using a pickaxe with it, you will be able to break stone blocks and get it instantly in item form. However, if you don’t have this enchantment for use on the crafting table or as an enchanted book, you can smelt cobblestone in a furnace to get stone.

Smelting cobblestone in a furnace

The furnace is one of the basic utility blocks in the game that only requires 8 cobblestone blocks to craft. We have already prepared a detailed guide to make and use a furnace in Minecraft, so you don’t need to waste any time.

Moreover, to use a furnace you will need fuel. It can be any wooden block or item, as well as flammable items, such as coal, charcoal, or a lava bucket. Though, we also mentioned everything you need to know about fuels in the furnace article linked above.

Minecraft Smooth Stone: Crafting Recipe

When you have collected and crafted the required resources, let’s check out the crafting, or should we say, smelting recipe of smooth stone in Minecraft.

  1. Then, right-click on the furnace to open its smelting UI.
  2. Add the fuel of your choice in the bottom slot on the left side.
  1. Then, place a stone block(s) in the upper slot on the left.
  1. After a few seconds, the arrow in the center will start filling up, and a stone block will get smelted and turned into a smooth stone block, which will appear in the result slot on the right.
  2. To take the smooth stone block out of the furnace, just click on it and move it to your inventory.

Where to Find Smooth Stone in Minecraft

Minecraft allows you to obtain most blocks and items in at least two different ways. That’s also the case for the smooth stone block. So, besides smelting, you can find smooth stone in the following places:

  • Butcher’s Houses in Villages (Plains, Savanna, Snowy Plains Biomes)
  • Chest in the Mason’s House in Villages
  • Trail Ruins

Best Uses of Smooth Stone in Minecraft

Now that you have obtained smooth stone, let’s see what uses this block has in the game:

1. Building Block

The primary use of a smooth stone block and its slab variant is as a building block. It’s a pretty block that’s pleasant to look at. Its light and bright gray texture makes it a good option for any floor design. Furthermore, since you make it in a furnace, it can be a good addition in the super smelter or a forge room. Due to its highly polished appearance, it can even be used as a decoration piece that’s meant to represent a thoroughly processed material.

2. Crafting Ingredient

Full smooth stone block appears in two crafting recipes. One of them is for the blast furnace. It’s a furnace variant that smelts ores and metals twice as quickly as a regular furnace. The catch, however, is that it can only smelt those items and nothing else. If you would like to learn more about how to make blast furnace in Minecraft, check out our linked guide.

Smooth stone slab is the other crafting recipe that requires you to use the smooth stone block. It behaves much like other slabs in the game. You will need 3 smooth stone blocks to craft 6 smooth stone slabs. Placing them in any row of the crafting table completes the smooth stone slab recipe.

3. Stonecutter Ingredient

If you’re going the crafting table route, you will need at least 3 smooth stone blocks to craft at least a single smooth stone slab. However, the stonecutter route is so much more efficient, as the ratio of the smooth stone blocks and smooth stone slabs is 1:2. This means a single block of smooth stone is enough to craft its slab variant.

So, whenever you’re working with different types of stone blocks, always use a stonecutter.
