Some users get a black screen even before the login screen on Windows 11. It means that Windows is not properly loading, and there might be some internal system issues. In such cases, you can’t access the Task Manager or restart Explorer. So you need to kickstart Windows 11’s troubleshooter to fix the problem. Here is how to go about it.

1. First, shut down your PC. Now, turn it on, and as the Windows loading sign appears, shut down again. Now, turn on your PC and shut it down again. If Windows 11 is showing a black screen after a recent update, perhaps, it has to do with the latest update that may have broken some system components. In that case, it’s best to uninstall the last update. Follow the steps below for detailed instructions.

1. To uninstall the last update on Windows 11, we need to force-open the recovery menu just like we did above in method #5. Restart your PC and shut it down the moment the Windows logo appears. Repeat this process 2-3 times, and the Recovery screen will appear.

5. Startup Repair

2. Here, click on Advanced options -> Troubleshoot -> Advanced options -> Uninstall updates.

2. Follow the on-screen instructions and choose the restore point. Your computer will now restart, and the black screen issue should be fixed. Note that, this process will take considerable time, so keep patience.

8. System Restore

9. Reset the PC

Finally, if none of the methods above worked in solving the black screen issue, you will have to reset your Windows 11 PC to get back to a functional state. This will factory reset your Windows 11 PC and will certainly fix the black screen issue. Don’t worry, as all your files and folders from other drives won’t be deleted except for the data in the C drive (Desktop, Documents, Downloads, and more). All your installed programs will be removed, though.

1. On the recovery screen, click on Advanced options -> Troubleshoot -> Reset this PC.

9. Reset the PC

2. After that, choose “Keep my files“. Now, it will reinstall Windows 11 on your PC, and the black screen issue will be gone.

I am facing exact same problem as you, also after same failed windows updates…
    If you’ve fixed the problem
Can you please tell me, how did you??

Well these advices are mostly funny. If I get black screen after login (anyway my login screen is also black) and I am not able to bring up any action, then how you think I can “run new task” when tasksnager does not shows up, or uninstall last update, if I cant reach settings orbwindows refresh center, etc? Anyway these blackouts occur immediat3ly after failed windows updates from which there are at least 4 in a year if there are 2 updates in a year.

I totally agree! How can you do ANY of these steps if you have a black screen!

      • Leigh says:

Exactly! How can I possibly choose any of these options if I cannot see anything but a black screen? I just wonder how long these tech savvy people have spent studying, researching, and writing these articles but they simply cannot understand that none of these are possible because I can ONLY SEE A B;ACK SCREEN!?

I recently purchased a Lenovo Legion 5i Pro a high end configuration laptop which set me back a couple of grand in my bank account. But when I got into this black screen issue the very next day and to say I was little worried will be an understatement. I would rather say I was in panick mode, because even after trying the above 8 options (except 9- Reset PC and keep files), I could not resolve the black screen issue.

But, in the end, I think I figured out the root cause of my issue and was able to fix it successfully. This was a very rare instance where I had setup my VPN to start up along with windows and then disable all wifi access for all apps if the VPN is not turned ON. it blocked all new Windows 11 updates and downloads on my system. (Windows 11 update happened on the second day after I turned ON this laptop the very first time).

Because there was no wifi, windows updater couldn’t download any new files onto my system. Even the windows installer was not available on my PC to uninstall the apps like VPN which I tried to uninstall in safe mode but no with luck. So I had to manually delete the VPN installation folders and files altogether and then choose the option 9 from this article “Reset PC and keep files”, to fix my issue. This option alone could have fixed the issue because it would have cleaned up all apps and installations, but this I would never known the root cause of this issue

Now while I am a small time data analyst I am nowhere near System Administration so Pros, please correct me if my understanding is wrong. Hope someone in the same boat will find this comment helpful.

Restarting explorer.exe through the task manager did the trick. Thanks a lot.

  • Arjun Sha says:

Most of the fixes are done in recovery environment so the display will work there. Also, for some registry and Explorer fixes, we have added keyboard shortcuts to trigger the utilities.

I’m not sure who else is still having issues with this but my bf got a new pc, it’s a 3 months old and he bought it pre-built. About a week ago he had this issue and was able to fix it by putting windows 11 on a drive and getting it to go through that way. Now this time, same issues but it is absolutely refusing to boot up in any way. It loads his BIOS page and then goes do an indefinite black screen. He can’t get it to go into safe mode either.
