If you are good at Overwatch then you will be good at any one of these games in no time because most of the skills you learned will carry over to the new games. So, without any further ado, here are the top 20 Overwatch alternatives in 2020.

Best Games like Overwatch You Should Try (2020)

Developed by Blizzard Entertainment, Overwatch has long been a great team-based multiplayer first-person shooter. The hero shooter assigns players into teams of six and then pits them against each other. Players are asked to work together to defend control points and even escort a payload across the map in a limited amount of time.

The presence of several game modes along with the fascinating player-customizable server makes the hero shooter a treat to play. That said, Overwatch is no longer as fascinating as it once used to be due largely to the arrival of a number of noted challengers.

Even though it has added several action-packed modes including arcade modes in recent times, they lack the fire-power to appeal to those who are fond of nerve-racking battles. But bother not, this is where the top Overwatch alternatives come into the play. Let’s explore the roundup to pick the right substitutes for your gaming spree!

1. Paladins (PC, PS4, Xbox One)

Paladins is very similar to Overwatch in terms of gameplay. Both these games offer a first-person shooter experience mixed with MOBA features. However, there are a few differences between both these games. Paladins focuses more on the customization of each character using a “Card” feature that can also be a bit confusing for new players at times.

20 Best Games like Overwatch You Should Play

Paladins boasts a diverse cast of Champions like sharpshooting humans, mech-riding goblins, mystical elves, and jetpack-clad dragons. As each champion has a unique style, the gameplay never seems to lose the charm.

It also caters to those who prefer running around and fighting on larger maps while Overwatch keeps the maps short. Paladins has a bit slower gameplay than Overwatch and focus on strategy instead of running and gunning. And that’s exactly what makes it a better rival for those who love to hatch strategies and trap their enemies.

Just a couple of days back, Respawn Entertainment dropped a surprise announcement about the launch of ‘Apex Legends’, a new battle royale game that’s set in the world of Titanfall 2. Yes, Overwatch is not really a battle royale game, however, there’s more to Apex Legends than a battle royale. It’s about the teamwork and coordination that’ll take you a long way in the game, and that’s Overwatch is all about, right?

8. Apex Legends

In Apex Legends, you get to select players from the roster, following which you’ll be dropped in a location called “King Canyon”. Your objective is to collect the loot, just like you would in games like PUBG and Fortnite, and survive to be the last squad standing. You have to defend your own Moneyball while pushing towards your enemy’s base.

Monday Night combat

The game offers unique playstyle and an aesthetically pleasing design which certainly makes it one of a kind. Both games are cooperative shooters while Monday Night Combat is a third-person shooter, unlike Overwatch’s first-person angle. Still, it’s a really fun game and you should definitely give it a try.

One of my top picks of this game is the crossfire mode that sets teams of players against each other. Each team is backed by robots that fight the battle on their behalf.

16. Plants vs. Zombies: Battle for Neighborville (PC, Xbox One, PS4)

Developed by PopCap, “Plants vs. Zombies: Battle for Neighborville” is the next iteration of Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare 2. The third-person shooter game boasts 20 customizable gameplay classes that have been categorized into three groups such as attackers, defenders, and supporters.

Plants Vs. Zombies- Battle for Neighborville

Just like Overwatch, Plants vs. Zombies: Battle for Neighborville also features interesting multiplayer modes where players can compete against each other to showcase their valor. The objective-based Turf Takeover mode and the team deathmatch variant Team Vanquish are the most fun-loving multiplayer modes.

Another feature that makes Plants vs. Zombies: Battle for Neighborville a solid alternative to Overwatch is a number of player-versus-environment open zones. Aside from indulging in hard-fought battles, players can explore the beautiful environments, find collectibles, and also complete quests to earn a lot of goodies. Long story short, Plants vs. Zombies: Battle for Neighborville is one of the best games you can play on your PC right now.

17. Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (Windows, macOS, PS4, Xbox One)

Counter-Strike: Global Offensive is a top-notch multiplayer shooter that can take on Overwatch with aplomb. The fourth installment of the Counter-Strike series sets two teams against each other. While one team is called the Terrorists, the other is named Counter-Terrorists.

Counter-Strike- Global Offensive

Both the teams are tasked to eliminate each other to get the victory. Though the gameplay and the objective of CS: Go’s gameplay differs from those of Overwatch, there are quite a few elements like the teamwork that seems on the same line. Just like Overwatch, it also offers separate objectives that go a long way in keeping boredom at bay.

Moreover, CS: GO features nine game modes including a battle royale game-mode and the danger zone which can take even pro shooters for a long spin. That’s not all, the app also lets community members host their own servers with custom maps and game modes. If you prefer to have more control, you should keep in mind this interesting feature. Everything considered, CS: GO is a power-packed replacement for Overwatch.

18. Red Eclipse (Windows, macOS, Linux)

If you find Overwatch lacking in the power-packed action, give a shot to Red Eclipse. The first-person arena shooter feature parkour, impulse boosts, dashing, and other fascinating tricks that make the gameplay thrilling. Besides, it also packs a ton of mutators and several game-altering variables which play a key role in offering a personalized experience.

Red Eclipse (Windows, macOS, Linux)

On the customization front, Red Eclipse is a touch better than Overwatch. If you are someone who puts customization on the forefront, it could be a better alternative for you.

Even in terms of weapons, this open-source game can give a strong competition Overwatch. It features seven unique weapons that let you wreak havoc in the rivals’ camp. Not just that, it also allows you to create maps with other players for a more personalized gaming experience. Taking everything into account, Red Eclipse is a complete substitute for Overwatch.

19. Xonotic (macOS, Windows, and Linux)

What makes Xonotic so exciting is arena-style first-person shooting gameplay. If you find the arena-style fire-power missing from Overwatch, you shouldn’t fail to try it out. The impressive graphics coupled with plenty of weapons in the armory make it a treat to play.

Xonotic (macOS, Windows, and Linux)

Each weapon consists of a primary fire and a UT-like secondary fire to let you unleash a massive attack on enemies. In terms of weapon quality, Xonotic is on par with Overwatch. Besides, it features multiple game modes just like its noted counterpart so that you can choose the desired mode based on your preference.

Among several fascinating game modes, the ones that have caught my eyes are deathmatch, capture the flag, clan arena, nexball, and freeze tag. That’s not all, Xonotic also boasts a solid roster of 25 official maps which bring a lot of fun into the mix. Not to mention, it also comes with a ton of community-made maps that you would love to give a shot.

Despite having all these cool features, Xonotic is available for free, which makes it one of the best free Overwatch alternatives for PC.

20. Warsow (macOS, Windows, and Linux)

Last but not least, Warsow is an action-packed first-person shooter that can be an able substitute for Overwatch. The fast-paced arena shooter features challenging gameplay where speed proves to be the differentiator factor.

Warsow (macOS, Windows, and Linux)

As a player, you have to adopt all sorts of ways to eliminate enemies. Be it jumping, dodging, dashing, or wall-jumping, you need to excel in each aspect to take control of the game. If Overwatch claims to have one of the most exciting gameplay, Warsow is not behind either.

One of my favorite features of Warsow is that it keeps nasty graphical violence away without decreasing intensity. So, if you hate to see blood flying around in an action-packed first-person shooter, you would really appreciate this feature.

Quite a few of these are no longer available or are dead (Blacklight is no longer available for example)

  • will says:

Do not play Paladins, the afkers/throwers are on steroids in that game and unlike Overwatch you can’t leave or avoid or report or remove the player for throwing/afking. It can be fun and a lot of the gameplay issues in Overwatch are not there, but this problem is so common (almost every match) the game is unplayable.

paladins is trash. nothing is like over watch. after hitting grandmaster in overwatch and playing for over a year, im kinda burned out and was looking for something new.
