- Threads has added the option to now let you hide custom words and phrases from appearing on your feed, replies, and notifications.
- Instagram head Adam Mosseri announced this feature on Thursday in a Threads post.
- To hide words on the app, go to your profile > tap globe or padlock icon > Hidden Words > Manage custom words and phrases.
In a recent announcement, Instagram’s head Adam Mosseri revealed that Threads is expanding its “Hidden Words” functionality. Previously limited to replies, Hidden Words can now be used to filter out unwanted terms and phrases from the Threads platform including feeds, searches, profiles, and post replies. Mosseri emphasizes that this addition aims to bring a more positive conversation environment for Threads users. Here’s how it works.
How to Hide Words and Phrases in Threads
As you would expect, the feature works similarly to the Muted words option on X (formerly Twitter). It will help you avoid spoilers and sensitive topics that you don’t want to show up on your feed. The feature is live for every Threads user, and if you want to ban specific words, here’s how to do it.
- On Threads, tap on your profile icon from the bottom navigation bar.
- Tap on the top left globe or padlock icon to access profile settings.
- Go to the Hidden Words option.
- Select the On option under “Custom words and phrases”.
- Now tap on Manage custom words and phrases.
- Enter the words that you want to hide and then tap on Add.
If you want to hide more than one word or phrase, then use a comma to separate them and add other words. When you tap on Add, the app will automatically separate them. You can tap on each one to edit or delete them.
The growth of Threads is a positive sign for those who are tired of X and the recent changes made to the platform. While initially receiving heavy support, the hype for Threads down soon after, but we are seeing a resurgence of users flocking on to the platform.
Threads previously added the trending page, and now hidden words have landed on the app. So it is likely we will see more features get imported from X in the coming future. But if they help make the platform a better place, then I am all for it. Which feature do you want to see next on Threads? Let us know in the comments below.
