Beebom App 2.0: New UI, Portrait Videos, Dark Mode and a Lot More!

Beebom App 2.0

We launched the Beebom Instant Tech News app back in May last year and the app was an instant hit among our fans. Thanks to the support of our fans, the app crossed 100,000 downloads in less than a year with a 4.8 rating on the Play Store to boot. We’ve been constantly working on the app since its launch, steadily improving the functionality with the help of your valuable feedback and paying close attention to the interesting feature suggestions that you’ve been sending us. For the last couple of months we’ve been working on a major update which introduces some of the most requested features to the app. The all-new Beebom app 2.0 has been available to beta testers for some time now, who’ve helped us polish out any issues with the latest update.

You might already know that here at Beebom we lay immense focus on quality in everything that we do and now that our updated app has reached that same standard, we’ve officially released it onto the Google Play Store. The new Beebom App 2.0 brings a completely redesigned UI along with cool new features that you’ll definitely appreciate. Let’s take a close look at all that’s new in the Beebom App 2.0:

Beebom App 2.0: All That’s New

1. New User Interface

Old UI (left) vs. New UI

First and foremost, the new Beebom 2.0 has a spanking new UI which closely follows the Material Design guidelines prescribed by Google and gives users a more streamlined experience while they’re getting their daily dose of instant tech news.

We’ve done away with the old hamburger menu and the new app has been divided into three gesture friendly tabs – the News tab, the Videos tab and the Profile tab.

Based on your feedback, we’ve also updated the ‘Trending Today’ section in the News tab, which you all know and love. The updated ‘Trending Today’ section now looks and works better than the one on the previous version of the Beebom app, featuring relevant images along with the most trending topics in the news for the day.

2. Gestures

As we mentioned earlier, the updated app has been divided into three new gesture friendly tabs. You can easily switch between the tabs by swiping left or right on the app’s home screen. Not only that, we’ve also introduced gesture based navigation within news stories and videos which offer a far more intuitive browsing experience. Within the news stories, you’ll be able to swipe left to go the next story and swipe right to go to the previous story. If you’re done reading news and want to head back to the home screen, you can just swipe down to go back.

The new intuitive gestures have also been extended to the video tab. Once you start watching a video, you can double tap on the left or right edge of the current video to rewind or forward the video and if you’re down watching you can easily swipe down to return to the main video feed.

3. Portrait Videos

With the new Beebom App 2.0 we’ve also introduced exclusive portrait videos for the Beebom App 2.0. The new portrait videos appear in the second tab and unlike our usual YouTube or Facebook videos, which are rather long, the exclusive app videos are crisp, yet informational.

The new portrait videos are carefully planned and executed for the app only and you won’t find these videos on any of our other platforms. These videos address some of the most trending topics in the tech world and feature the same familiar faces that you’ve seen in our YouTube and Facebook videos. The videos are accompanied with a short description at the bottom, which can be brought up by swiping up anywhere on the screen.

4. Read More Button

Once you open a news story you’ll be greeted with a new bar which features the new ‘read more’ button, along with the bookmark, share and like buttons. This new read more button is a feature that has also been requested by a number of Beebom app users who’ve often asked us to provide more detailed versions of stories for a couple of popular news topics.

The read more button redirects to the Beebom website, where you’ll find a detailed version of that particular story, with additional information and insights that might not have been mentioned in the compact app version.

5. Dark Mode

Coming to the most requested feature, for which we’ve received hundreds and hundreds of emails from you guys, the new ‘dark mode’. The Beebom App 2.0 has a new dark mode which can be enabled from within the app settings that can be found in the profile tab.

As you’d expect, the dark mode gives the entire UI a clean dark look, which is a blessing if you’re one of those who like reading in the dark. In my opinion, the dark mode looks way cooler than the white UI and I personally keep it enabled at all times.

6. Widgets

The new Beebom App 2.0 also brings with it a handy new widget which you can place on your home screen and stay up to date on the latest tech news. The simple 4×1 widget frequently updates to display the latest story posted on the app and you can even browse older stories by pressing the left and right arrows in the widget. Tapping on the widget will instantly take you the highlighted story, so you can read a short and crisp report of that particular topic.

7. Likes

As soon as we released the first version of the Beebom app, our inbox was flooded with requests to add a like button to the app. Well, now you’ve got what you asked for. The updated Beebom App 2.0 has a new ‘like button’ which can be found right next to the bookmark button on the news cards in the main feed and in the new bar which can be found at the bottom of each news story. The like button is also available in the videos tab and is placed next to the bookmark button at the bottom right corner of each video.

Liking particular stories and videos gives us invaluable insight into the type of content you prefer to read or watch, so that we can bring you more similar content in the future. The like button will also help you easily find trending stories/videos that other users have liked on the app.

well there is no android accessibility tools support in your app. the Google Talkback which is a screen reader and used by many visually challenged people reports every button as a unlabeled button. also the video feed is not accessible. here is my recommendation to the Beebom team, just turn on each accessibility settings one by one in your phones and try to use your app.
