Who Is Gojo Satoru in Jujutsu Kaisen?

Gojo Satoru is one of the major supporting characters in Jujutsu Kaisen anime and manga. Despite being a supporting character, he has a greater following than the main protagonist and other characters. Gojo is one of the Jujutsu universe’s four special-grade sorcerers, which is a big deal in the Jujutsu world. He is also regarded as the strongest character in the Jujutsu-verse (as he himself states: “It’ll be fine. I’m the strongest there is, after all” in the very first scene he was introduced).

Gojo Satoru is the pride of the Gojo family and descends from one of the most prominent clans. In 400 years, he is the first member of his line to inherit the “Limitless” (Infinity Technique) as well as the “Six Eyes” (Ocular Jujutsu). One can immediately see why he is the strongest after all since he possesses two distinct and devastating abilities. Currently, Gojo Satoru works as a high school teacher at Tokyo Jujutsu High and is the mentor of the first-year students Itadori Yuji, Nobara Kugisaki, and Megumi Fushiguro.

When Did Gojo Reveal His Eyes for the First Time?

The very first time we saw Gojo Satoru’s absolutely gorgeous light blue “Six Eyes” was during his fight with Jogo (one of the special-grade cursed spirits) in episode seven (Jujutsu Kaisen: Assault) of the anime.

When he was confronted by Jogo with his red-hot domain expansion, Gojo took advantage of the opportunity to show Itadori Yuji and us his abilities. When Gojo removed his blindfold for the first time and used the power of his Six Eyes, he created his Domain Expansion: Infinite Void to counter Jogo’s domain in JJK anime. Within his domain expansion, Gojo pulls off an “I am not in danger, Skyler. I am the danger”(Breaking Bad) scenario and treats Jogo as if he’s nothing at all.

Why Does Gojo Wear a Blindfold in Jujutsu Kaisen?

The true reason why Gojo wears a blindfold is because of his “Six Eyes”. Like Thanos (from Marvel universe) says, “A Small Price to Pay for Salvation”. Everything comes with a price. In this case, Gojo’s heightened sight easily drains all his energy and tires him out quickly when he’s not wearing a blindfold.

Well, just like any other jujutsu, Gojo’s ocular power requires him to use cursed energy, and he would unnecessarily use all his energy when not sporting a blindfold. So yeah, he wears a blindfold or sunglasses all of the time, except for when he needs to use his full powers. To be specific, Gojo wears a black blindfold in the anime and a makeshift blindfold made out of bandages in the Jujutsu Kaisen 0 movie.

How Can Satoru Gojo See Through the Blindfold?

In an interview with Comic Book, JJK creator Gege Akutami explained the concept of Six Eyes and the mystery behind Gojo’s blindfold. According to a Twitter translation of the Jujutsu Kaisen official fan book, Akutami explained that the Six Eyes let him see the cursed energy emanating from others in a detailed manner. Gojo’s vision resembles high-resolution thermography while wearing blindfolds, exclaimed Akutami. The blindfold kind of reduces the amount of cursed energy spent, which is great, and he can still sense all the things around him.

For example, in anime episode 20 (Jujutsu Kaisen: Sorcery Fight), Gojo leaps into the air during an attack on Tokyo Jujutsu High and can see the cursed energies of Yuji and Todo (confirming they are alive) while they are fighting a special-grade cursed spirit. He then proceeds to use his Hollow: Purple technique to crush the special-grade cursed spirit.

Now, you must be wondering – how does Gojo see things that don’t have cursed energy of their own? Luckily, Akutami also stated that Gojo can see non-cursed energy objects, buildings, doors, and other things through the residue and flow of the cursed energy even when wearing his blindfold. This essentially means that Gojo can see clearly even while wearing a blindfold.

Akutami further emphasized the significance of the blindfold by saying (translated, via Twitter), “If he doesn’t wear the blindfold, he’ll get tired easily, even though he is using the reverse cursed technique to keep his brain fresh (manga reference, Chapter 76).” The creator has also mentioned that if an ordinary person were to wear Gojo’s sunglasses, they will be able to nothing but pitch-black darkness, allowing us to differentiate and actually grasp Gojo’s abilities.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Gojo Satoru see through his blindfold?

Why does Gojo wear Sunglasses?

Yeah this is incorrect… His Six Eyes and limitless cursed technique allows him to recycle his cursed energy output to a near infinite extent which effectively causes the expense of using curse energy for his techniques to 0. His blindfold is a way for him to limit the effect of his six eyes (basically debuffing himself) so existence doesn’t become too easy.

  • Pookie says:

I believe this is slightly off, mainly due to the fact that Gojo can not run out of cursed energy. Ever. Thats impossible.
With his “six eyes” he can reduce all cursed energy costs to 0. Leaving him with unlimited cursed energy. So the blindfold theory is quite wrong. I would have to say that he uses it to keep himself from inadvertently using his abilities by accident.

  • Avinash Kumar Sharma says:

Isn’t his six eyes makes his cursed energy spent almost equal to zero? So how will he tire out when the guy can literally never run out of curse energy?
Idk need to confirm with Akutami.
Still a good detail answer but need to confirm with the author as well I dont think he ever said that he wears the blindfold because he might tire out.
