After suffering a huge blow from the EU Commission, Stop Killing Games, a coalition of gamers advocating for game preservation and consumer rights, officially joined a lawsuit in the Netherlands against PlayStation. The Dutch lawsuit targets Sony, claiming the company abuses its market power to make digital games expensive.
Stop Killing Games has now publicly backed the Dutch lawsuit, announcing its support for the Fair PlayStation campaign.
In a YouTube video released on August 11, 2026, Stop Killing Games, along with Does It Play?, a community-driven preservation organization, has announced its support for SM&C’s lawsuit against Sony’s alleged control over the pricing of games on PlayStation.
The lawsuit demands approximately $457 million in damages for millions of PlayStation users. The group demands Sony repay the money it made unfairly from Dutch players.
The video explains that Sony has a monopoly on digital PlayStation games. This means that players can only buy games digitally from Sony’s own PlayStation Store.
When Sony shuts down the production of physical games, players will be left with no alternative but to follow Sony’s pricing and distribution policies, potentially paying up to 47% more for digital games on average.
Stop Killing Games calls this a form of “Sony Tax” and says “it is against the law”. The case started back in 2024 against Sony. As time passed, it gained momentum after Sony decided to discontinue production of physical discs for all PlayStation titles starting on January 1, 2028.
The lawsuit is still ongoing, and no decision has been made yet. Sony’s decision to move away from physical PlayStation discs has already sparked controversy. Some Sony publishers even claimed that they weren’t informed before the announcement.
With PlayStation moving into a digital-only era, the case could become important for how digital game pricing and ownership are handled on consoles.
