In July 2026, Sony announced the end of production for physical disc-based PlayStation games starting in 2028. Now, just a month later in August, PS5 boxes can be seen carrying a warning label signalling the end of physical disc support in January 2028.
An image shared by X user Behind the Games shows that the new 1 TB PS5 boxes now carry an important warning label that reads, “From Jan. 2028, newly released games on PlayStation will be available for purchase on PlayStation Store and at retailers in digital format only. Discs for games released before Jan. 2028 can continue to be played on this console.”
In Sony’s latest earnings call on July 31, 2026, CFO Lin Tao confirmed that retailers would sell codes in PlayStation physical boxes replacing traditional discs starting in January 2028. Not just that, Tao also doubled down on their all-digital push and confirmed that PlayStation will “cautiously move forward” with its plan to end physical disc production amid growing player concerns.
Despite halting the production of physical discs, the new PS5 boxes confirm that all discs released before January 2028 will be playable on the console. So, major PlayStation titles releasing physically before the time frame, such as God of War Laufey, Marvel’s Wolverine, and more, will be playable on PlayStation 5 consoles beyond 2028.
Of course, this important notice on new PS5 boxes didn’t sit well with PlayStation players, who already have a one-week boycott planned starting August 23, 2026, called the PS Blackout. During this time, players will turn off their PlayStation consoles and make no digital purchases to protest against Sony’s disc-free future.
But one thing is clear – the warning on new PS5 boxes all but confirms that Sony won’t backtrack on their decision to kill disc-based PlayStation games. However, this raises the question of whether Sony’s next console, the PlayStation 6, rumored to release in fall 2027, will support physical discs released before January 2028 or not.
