Snapchat Emoji Meanings Explained

Snapchat assigns emojis to your friendship based on how often you share Snaps and chat with the other person. If you are seeing an emoji next to their name and wondering what it is, then you have come to the right place. Read on to learn all the Snapchat emoji meanings and become an avid Snapchatter. From the yellow heart to the fire emoji, we’ll look at what every Snapchat emoji means in this article.

What’s the Use of a Snapchat Emoji?

Unlike traditional emojis used in other messaging apps, Snapchat emojis serve a specific purpose. Snapchat emojis, also called Friend emojis, are assigned based on how often you interact with a particular friend on the app.

Depending on the frequency of Snaps and messages, you are assigned a friend category along with an emoji to represent it. It’s a fun way to establish your relationship with other Snapchat users.

Snapchat Friend Emoji Meanings

Since each emoji has its hidden meaning, we have detailed all the Snapchat emojis below. You can check them out right here:

Smile 😊 (Best Friends)

The smile emoji means that you are one of the best friends of the person you are chatting with. Snapchat shows a smile emoji next to a person when they’re one of your best friends.

Remember that this doesn’t mean both of you are the top best friends of each other. You will see this emoji next to multiple Snapchat contacts as long as you frequently send them Snaps.

Yellow Heart πŸ’› (Besties)

The yellow heart emoji will show up if you two are the top best friends of each other. This means that you two are besties on Snapchat. This is probably the person you spend most of your time talking to and sharing Snaps with on the app.

Red Heart ❀️ (BFF)

The red heart means that you are each other’s BFF or best friends forever. Friends who manage to be each other’s bestie on Snapchat for two consecutive weeks will get a red heart emoji next to their name in the chat list.

Two Pink Hearts πŸ’• (Super BFF)

Super BFF is the ultimate symbol of friendship on Snapchat beside Snapstreaks. The two pink hearts are awarded when you have been each other’s top best friend for 2 months in a row. You will see two pink hearts when you unlock this friend emoji category.

Sunglasses Face 😎 (Mutual Best Friends)

The Sunglasses emoji is for mutual best friends. This will appear if one of your best friends is also one of their best friends. This emoji is fairly common among people with common interests or those attending the same school or college.

Grimace 😬 (Mutual Besties)

A grimace face emoji signifies that your top best friend is also their top best friend aka besties. This often happens in tightly-knit friend circles, typically with three or four people.

As long as the friendship dynamic is clear, seeing this emoji next to someone’s name isn’t something to worry about.

Peace Sign ✌️(Favorite Group)

The peace emoji appears next to a group on Snapchat and it means that it is your favorite group.

It’s similar to the heart emoji, as it helps you learn which groups you spend most time chatting and sharing Snaps with on the app.

Baby πŸ‘Ά (New Friends)

The baby emoji means a new friend. It will show up next to someone’s name when you have recently added and newly become a Snapchat friend with someone.

Adding each other to the friend’s list is important in Snapchat. If not, the messages you send will remain in pending status.

Cake πŸŽ‚ (Birthday)

A cake emoji will appear when it’s your friend’s birthday. If you’re someone who finds it hard to keep track of birthdays, discovering this feature is likely to be a godsend for you. You can read about other ways to find out your friend’s birthday on Snapchat using our guide.

Gold Star 🌟

A golden star means someone other than you has replayed your friend’s Snap in the past 24 hours. It may (or may not) be a good conversation starter, depending on your relationship dynamic with your friend.

Smirk 😏 (One-Sided BFs)

The smirk emoji on Snapchat meant that you were one of their best friends, but they were not one of yours. It was brutal, to say the least. Snapchat has since removed the emoji, presumably due to broken friendships and relationships this must have caused.

FireπŸ”₯(Ongoing Snapstreak)

A fire emoji appears next to the contact’s name when a Snapstreak starts. As explained in our Snapchat streaks explainer, a Snapstreak begins when you send and receive Snaps from a person at least once for 3 consecutive days.

100 Emoji πŸ’― (100 Snapstreak)

Those dedicated enough to maintain a Snapstreak for 100 consecutive days will see the 100 emoji on the 100th day.

It is undoubtedly a moment worth celebrating. You can learn how to share Snapstreak in your Story from our linked guide.

HourglassβŒ›(Ending Snapstreak)

The hourglass emoji means that your Snapstreak is about to end. It will show up when you two haven’t sent exchanged Snaps in the last 20 hours, and you have 4 hours left before the streak expires.

You can learn about how to get rid of the hourglass emoji in this read. However, in case you do end up losing your streak to some unforeseen reasons, here is a guide to revive your Snapstreak on Snapchat.
