Best Google News Alternatives in 2020

In this section, we have mentioned 10 alternatives to Google News along with two bonuses at the end. Be assured, most of the news platforms have some degree of human curation to keep the homepage clean from fake news. Apart from that, you also get dark mode and offline reading on almost all the apps. Now having said that, let’s go through the list.

1. Microsoft News (MSN)

Microsoft News or in other words, MSN is one of the oldest news portals on the web. It was launched in 1995 whereas Google News was started in 2002. Having such a long history of curating news, MSN is easily one of the best Google News alternatives in this list. Similar to Google News, it allows you to customize your news sources with an ability to choose your preferred section. On the homepage, the news is updated in real-time with access to whole coverage of the event. It also has support for local languages so you can find many news sources in your local dialect. Besides that, there is dark mode, apps for both Android and iOS and the ability to save articles for later reading. All in all, Microsoft News ticks all the major features of Google News and you can comfortably go with it.

2. Apple News

While Google News has a standalone web portal which can be accessed from any device, Apple News is limited to iOS and macOS devices only. So if you are from the Apple fold, Apple News is an outright Google News alternative for you. It has got all the features of Google News and the service is tightly integrated with your Apple ID. For example, besides personalized news reading, you can subscribe to newspapers, magazines, journals, and more. The best part about Apple News is that unlike Google News, here the news and stories are curated by human editors instead of AI. So you are unlikely to get any fake news or unauthentic information on your news feed. Apart from that, there is an option for dark mode, unlimited magazine downloads, and offline reading. Simply put, if you own an iPhone, an iPad or a MacBook, Apple News is the best way to consume news.

3. Yahoo News

While Yahoo is slowly fading from public memory, its news service called Yahoo News is still an old school choice for many users. Just like Google News, Yahoo News has a web portal where you can find local and world news, section-wise coverage, and real-time weather information on the homepage. While the news sources are quite good, there is no way to customize the feed on the web and that is a bummer. However, you can personalize your news sources on its app so that is great. Apart from that, Yahoo News is quite comparable to Google News in terms of news selection and coverage. If you have been a Yahoo user in the past, you can give Yahoo News a shot.

4. Bundle

If you are looking for a mobile app which brings quality news with a dash of great design then Bundle is one of the best Google News alternatives to opt for. In a sense, it’s a complete news app which rivals every Google News feature and even excels at some. To start with, Bundle brings personalized news feed from hundreds of news sources, blog, magazines and more. It offers notifications for breaking news, live score and local happenings. There are also some great accessibility features including offline mode, dark theme and reader mode for which Google News is quite popular. And that is not all, there is also a low data mode which brings down the overall size of the article so you can keep on reading. All these features make Bundle one of the best apps for consuming news and you should definitely try it once.

Inshorts is a unique news app which does not have as much feature as Google News but offers a short and succinct summary of news under 60 words. In this mobile-age where time is always running out, Inshorts seems a great proposition. However, do note that this hugely popular mobile app is available for Indian users only. Inshorts cuts through the clutter and provides essential information both in English and Hindi. As you read along, the app learns your usage behavior and recommends short snippet of news which you are likely to read. In tandem, Inshorts is not similar to Google News in any way, but both services have a common objective of delivering news albeit there is a difference in approach. Simply put, if you want to remain on top of current events without spending much time, you can go with Inshorts.

8. Associated Press

Associated Press is not a news aggregator platform like Google News, but a media agency which collects reports and local information across the globe through their on-ground correspondents. AP, as it’s called in short, is one of the oldest media agency in the world. Unlike traditional media houses, it offers facts and verified information bereft of any opinion or bias. AP is popularly known for its local reportage, photo stories, documented videos, confidential reports and so on. 9. Pocket

While Pocket is not a proper Google News alternative, it can definitely act like one. The primary use-case of Pocket is that you can save articles on Pocket for later reading. But as you move forward, Pocket learns your preferences and recommends popular articles and news that other users are currently reading. It offers something called “best of web” section under which articles are featured by human curators. Besides that, it has dark mode and an interesting “listen to article” feature which Google News doesn’t have. As I said, Pocket’s use-case is broadly for later reading, but you can extend it and make Pocket a full-fledged Google News alternative.

10. Inside

Inside is a unique newsletter service which is distinctive for its curation of news and informative articles. Essentially, it’s not a Google News alternative as Inside does not have a standalone news portal. However, it sends insightful news and articles from across different industries and topics right into your email box. It’s like a morning newspaper, but sent to your email box and highly curated to your taste. That’s great, right? You can follow broad topics like technology, security, politics, lifestyle and even niche topics like a certain place or a sportsperson and so on. Having curated news for your favorite topic is definitely a great way to scour through the news and I think Inside does a great job at that. You can definitely try this app if you are interested in curated news.

Bonus: Reddit News and Twitter Lists

Frankly speaking, Twitter and Reddit are two platforms from where I gather relevant information and learn about various happenings in the world. Let’s be real, in the times we are living in, most of the news break on Twitter and then followed on by media agencies. So why not use these platforms to stay ahead of the curve? Well, you can use Twitter to remain up to date on current events using the List feature. You can create lists for your favorite topics and include relevant Twitter handles in that list. For example, you can choose mainstream news outlets, ground reporters and journalists in the list and create a customized feed just like Google News. This way you will always remain informed about current events as they happen.

You can also use Reddit for creating a one-stop feed for all your interest topics. You can follow a number of subreddits depending on your interest and preferences. For news, you can subscribe to r/news, r/politics or your country-specific subreddit. Similarly, you can follow r/technology for tech-related news. As it’s clear, smart use of both Twitter and Reddit can easily replace Google News. Both the platforms have Google News features like bookmark and dark mode so you are well sorted on these fronts. To sum up, if you are looking for a Google News replacement, I would suggest going to Reddit and Twitter. You will absolutely love the new experience.

If you’re looking to find news other than CNN, CBS, NBC, ESPN, MSNBC, Jimmy Kimmel and the bent eared weirdo, these types of people are lowlifes that feed news to dumb people who buy it hook line and sinker.
Look at the communists who were able to manipulate and propagandize the dummies who watch that crap.
80 MILLION PEOPLE DID IN NOT WAY VOTE FOR A CHINESE PUPPET.

    And what is your recommendation?

  • Mollynocket Mills says:

There is no such beast called “Unbiased News”, all stories have some bias in them. Whether you agree with them is another issue. There are news stories that contain blatant, intentional lies in them such as found on Foxx News and Breitbarf, but if you are foolish to read that crap, you can’t complain about not being able to find an unbiased source.

  • Jfu says:

If your criteria is to read unbiased news in a readable format, all of the above are fails. If you want dark mode, saved articles and ads, the above are great.
