What Are The Acolytes in Star Wars

The tale of Star Wars continues to grow with the upcoming series, Star Wars: The Acolyte. This series will take us back to the High Republic Era which takes place 100 years before the event we witnessed in The Prequel Trilogy of Star Wars. This was a time when the Sith were thought extinct and no longer a threat to the Jedi or the Galaxy. However, it was far from the truth and the Sith rose again. Star Wars: The Acolyte will explore this very storyline but the question is, what is the Meaning of “Acolyte” or what are the Acolytes in Star Wars? In this article, find out!

An Apprentice of a Sith Lord Is an Acolyte

I’m sure you all know that a Padawan is the apprentice of a Jedi Master. Now since the Sith wields the dark side of The Force, they also have students they train to do the same. Since the dark side’s appeal is too strong a lot of people wish to be the apprentice of a Sith lord. A force-sensitive being who wishes and competes to be the apprentice of a Sith Lord to learn how to use the dark side of The Force is called an Acolyte in Star Wars. The way we see Mae, the central character of Star Wars: The Acolyte, fighting the Jedi suggests that she wishes to be the apprentice of a Sith Lord and hence the show is titled “The Acolyte”

While watching the trailer for Star Wars: The Acolyte we all witnessed an unnamed Sith Lord wielding a red lightsaber. This might have raised the question in your mind, “Why are the Sith lightsabers red?” Kyber Crystals, a lightsaber’s power source, do not form in red naturally. In their natural form, they are in different colors as we see the Jedi wield lightsabers of various colors.

To make a red lightsaber, the Sith hold the Kyber Crystal and flood it with all the hate, anger, and every negative emotion that had turned them to the Dark Side to corrupt or “bleed” the crystal. When the Kyber Crystal is corrupted it takes up a crimson red colour giving the Sith lightsabers a red colour.

How Do Acolytes Get Their Red Lightsabers

Since we have talked about how Siths make their lightsabers, let’s talk about how an Acolyte can get a Red Lightsaber to join the ranks of the Sith. To be recognized by the Sith Order, an Acolyte needs to kill a Jedi, take the dead Jedi’s Kyber Crystal, and bleed it for it to turn red to claim their red lightsaber. In the trailers of The Acolyte, we have seen Mae fighting Jedi and it is suggested that she killed one too. So, she may be on her way to joining ranks within the Sith Order.
