- Square Enix has revealed in its latest three-month report that around 90% of its game sales are digital.
- Between April and June 2026, over 6.65 million games were sold digitally, whereas only 730k were sold on a physical disc.
- Latest trends signal digital game sales make up most of Square Enix's core business.
Ever since Sony announced its plans to move away from physical media, new reports from other publishers have continued to highlight the industry’s growing shift toward digital games. Square Enix’s latest investor relations briefing provides another example of this trend.
According to Square Enix’s three-month financial results report for June 2026, around 90% of the company’s game sales during the quarter came from digital downloads. The report was published on August 10, 2026, on the Square Enix website.
The report states the company sold 6.65 million downloaded copies of its HD and MMO games between April and June 2026, which is FY 2027/3. In comparison, physical game sales only sold 730,000 copies in the same period.
The digital entertainment segment accounted for 78.4 billion yen, with an operating income of 17 billion yen. Square Enix sold around 3.45 million units digitally during the same period last year. This means that downloads increased by over 3 million units in just one year, proving the dominance of digital sales in modern times.

Physical sales also increased by around 170,000 copies sold when compared to last year. However, the year-on-year growth has been much slower in comparison with its digital counterpart. The recent Capcom report also showed a similar picture, where the digital sales vastly outnumber the physical sales, including its hit title Resident Evil Requiem.
Square Enix performed spectacularly in the previous quarter across all of its divisions. Net sales and operating income for PC and mobile/browser games increased over last year, indicating strong sales of new titles, MMO and catalog titles.
With digital downloads now making up the vast majority of Square Enix’s game sales, upcoming releases could further contribute to this trend. The publisher’s next major titles include the final chapter of the Final Fantasy VII remake, Final Fantasy 7 Revelation, which is scheduled for Spring 2027.
Furthermore, the latest data show that physical game sales in the US have fallen to a record low, further highlighting this shift. Square Enix’s latest fiscal quarter results offer another clear example of how the industry is gradually moving toward a digital-first future.
