  • The original creators of Until Dawn, Supermassive Games, are laying off 75 of their employees.
  • Supermassive has cited that the layoffs are taking place to "ensure the sustainability of the company".
  • In July 2025 as well, Supermassive laid off 36 employees ahead of the Directive 8020 release.

Last week, gamers heard about layoffs at Halo Studios after the release of Halo: Campaign Evolved. Today, Supermassive Games, the creators of games like Until Dawn and The Dark Pictures Anthology, posted online, announcing that up to 75 workers could potentially be laid off.

In the online X post, Supermassive Games states, “We have made the difficult decision to begin a redundancy consultation process, which we anticipate will result in the loss of up to 75 colleagues.” The studio explains the reason behind this step was “to ensure the sustainability of the company.”

Supermassive Games added, “We know this will be an incredibly difficult time for everyone, and our priority throughout the process will be to provide support to all those impacted.”

While games like Little Nightmares 3 performed decently commercially upon release, the most probable reason behind this unfortunate turn of events could be the underwhelming performance of Supermassive Games’ last release, Directive 8020. However, the studio has not confirmed that the game’s performance is directly responsible for the layoffs.

This is not the first time that Supermassive Games has faced layoffs in recent years. The Until Dawn developers reportedly let go of 36 employees in July 2025, shortly before delaying Directive 8020 to 2026. The studio also went through another round of layoffs in 2024, which highlights the continued instability the studio is currently facing.

The company has downsized significantly when compared to its glory days. The successive layoffs cast a shadow of doubt on the future of the company and future game releases. With another 75 employees potentially facing layoffs, Supermassive Games is once again undergoing a major restructuring similar to what Xbox faced earlier this year.

The studio’s future will likely depend on how its upcoming projects perform and whether it can stabilize its operations following years of workforce reductions, given that Until Dawn’s sequel, Until Dawn 2, is now being made by Firesprite.
