Redmi Phone With Snapdragon 855 Plus SoC Confirmed by Xiaomi

redmi k20 pro launched in India - Redmi K20 benchmarks

Qualcomm this week sprung a bit of a surprise on large sections of the global tech media by announcing the Snapdragon 855 Plus, a tweaked version of its flagship SoC with higher CPU and GPU clock speeds. Following the announcement, a string of Android OEMs, including Asus, Realme, Vivo, Nubia and Lenovo all teased devices with the new chipset on their respective Weibo pages.

Xiaomi is another Android vendor that is also planning to launch multiple devices with the Snapdragon 855 Plus under a number of its sub-brands. The company had earlier teased a Black Shark device with the new chip, and has now apparently confirmed that it will also launch a Redmi smartphone with the new chipset.

According to a Weibo post by Redmi General Manager, Lu Weibing, the device is already in the works, and is scheduled to be launched before the end of this year. There’s no immediate info about the device, but given that it will be a Redmi-branded phone, it is definitely expected to be priced affordably. We’ll hopefully get to have more info about it in the coming days.

In case you don’t know it already, Qualcomm earlier this week unveiled its next-flagship SoC, the Snapdragon 855 Plus, with much the same hardware as the standard 855, but with overclocked CPU and GPU. The primary cores of the Kryo 485 CPU in the new SoC runs at up to 2.96GHz instead of the 2.84GHz clock speed of a standard Snapdragon 855 chipset. The Adreno 640 GPU has also been fine-tuned to offer a 15 percent increase in gaming performance, claims Qualcomm.
