We have included the step-by-step process to record calls on Android with Truecaller in this guide. We have also provided an explainer on whether you are allowed to record calls or not in different countries around the world. And finally, we have shared our personal experience with Truecaller’s call recording feature on various Android smartphones. You can move to any section of your choice using the table below.

Are You Allowed to Record Calls in Your Country?

In some countries, there are laws around recording and monitoring calls. Depending on where you reside, you may have to obtain consent or inform the user before recording the call. In some countries, call recording is not allowed at all.

For example, some states in the US require two-party consent, which means both the caller and the recipient must be aware the call is being recorded. In other US states, only one party needs to be aware of the recording.

In India, the Indian Telegraph Act 1885 bars anyone from tapping a conversation, except by Central Government or State Government and through a procedure established by law. However, there are numerous apps that offer call recording support, and recently, Google released its native Dialer app in India with the call recording feature. That said, Google Dialer informs the user before recording the call, which is a good thing, from a point of law.

However, users in India don’t like this broadcast feature and want a call recording option without informing the user. And that’s where Truecaller’s new Call Recording feature acts as a promising alternative to Google Dialer since it does not inform the user. Having said that, Truecaller squarely puts the onus on the caller to obtain consent. And Truecaller states that it will not be held liable for any and all responsibility from the use of this feature [call recording].

To sum up, if you want to record calls with Truecaller, it’s upon you to inform the user before recording the call. To learn more about the laws regarding call recording in other countries, you can head over to this Wikipedia article.

Setup Call Recording with Truecaller on Your Android Phone

1. First, go ahead and update Truecaller to the latest version. If you don’t have the app, you can install Truecaller (Free, offers in-app purchases) from the Play Store. I am on version 12.2.6, and the call recording feature is enabled for me on Truecaller.

2. Next, tap the hamburger menu from the top-left corner, and you will find the “Call Recordings” option here. Select it and tap “Setup now”.

3. Next, tap on “Continue” from the pop-up prompt and then “Accept” the terms and conditions. You might also get the prompt to set Truecaller as your default dialer app, but you don’t need to do that to use the feature. Call recording on Truecaller works even without changing your dialer.

5. Since you have not set Truecaller as your default dialer, you need to set Truecaller as your default caller ID and spam app. By doing so, the Call recording button will appear on the default dialer app, and you can easily record the call. To do so, open Truecaller -> hamburger menu -> Settings -> Caller ID. Here, tap “Set Truecaller as your Caller ID app” and grant the necessary permissions. And that’s it. You are done.

Note: On some Android phones, you have to enable “Allow Truecaller to appear on top” under the Caller ID menu.

6. Finally, to test the feature, I placed a call from my OnePlus 7T running Android 11, and the Call Recording button showed up on top of the default dialer. I simply tapped on the floating button, and just like that, Truecaller started recording my call with ease. It recorded the call audio from both sides, and the audio quality was surprisingly clear. I even made a call in loudspeaker mode, and again, it recorded the call without any echo or noise.

Initial Impressions: Call Recording on Truecaller for Android

There are many call recorder apps on the Play Store that promise to offer a full-fledged call recording feature but rarely do they work. In my experience, Truecaller’s call recording feature worked well, and I tested it on a host of Android devices. My OnePlus 7T running Android 11 already has native support for call recording, but Truecaller’s call recording also worked well, and the voice was clear. I also tested the feature on Mi A1 running Android 8, and it worked without any issues.

My Experience With Call Recording on android

However, when I tried it on Redmi Note 9 running Android 10, it didn’t work. Only one side of the conversation was being recorded for some reason, even though Redmi Note 9 comes with native call recording support. Similarly, call recording with Truecaller didn’t work on Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1 running Android 9. To conclude, the call recording feature currently does not work on all Android devices, so you will have to test the feature and check whether it works on your device or not. Also, note that it does not work on WhatsApp calls at all.
