Honkai Star Rail: Speed Breakpoints Explained

In Short
  • Speed determines the action order of the characters and enemies in Honkai Star Rail. Speed breakpoints in HSR allow characters to take multiple actions in a turn cycle.
  • The first 10 Speed breakpoints are: 90, 93.4, 106.7, 120.1, 133.4, 146.7, 160.1, 173.4, 186.7, and 200.1.
  • Some characters do better with more speed, while others do better with less speed, so fine tune speed for each character in your team composition.

Speed is the most important and least explained stat in Honkai Star Rail. Like most Turn-based games, Honkai Star Rail has a Speed stat that dictates the character action order and the number of actions per turn cycle. Hitting specific speed breakpoints allows characters to take multiple actions in a turn cycle. Here is a complete Honkai Star Rail Speed Breakpoint guide to help find the best speed stat for your character.

What are Speed Breakpoints in Honkai Star Rail

Speed Breakpoints are specific speed thresholds for characters that allow them to take multiple turns in one turn cycle. This is particularly important in Forgotten Hall and Pure Fiction game modes, as they have limited turn cycles. Here are all the Speed Breakpoints in HSR and the number of increased actions for the first 6-turn cycle.

The number of turns continues to increase with the following Turn Cycles. I have explained how to calculate the Speed Breakpoints later in the article, so make sure to give it a read.

134 Speed HSR

When we talk about Speed in Honkai Star Rail, the 134 speed is often mentioned as one of the main Speed Breakpoints. So, why is the 134 Speed Breakpoint so relevant in HSR?

If you take a look at the above table, you will see that the 134 Speed Breakpoint (133.4) is the first time a character gets 2 actions in Turn Cycle 0. This lets players easily do zero-cycle clears in Memory of Chaos. Besides that, characters like Jingliu can enter the Transmigration state in the Zero Turn Cycle.

How to Calculate Speed Breakpoints in HSR

Trailblazer

Speed Breakpoints and the action order of characters are calculated based on the Action Value. Action value is equal to 10000 divided by the Speed of the character.

For example, if Seele has 134 Speed, then her Action Value is 74.62. Comparatively, let’s say the enemy has 100 Speed, then the enemy’s Action Value is 100. The less the Action Value of a character is, the quicker they will take action, so in this example, Seele takes action before the enemy by 25 Action Value.

In the case of Turn Cycles, the Turn Cycle 0 in Forgotten Hall has 150 Action Value, while the other Turn Cycles have 100 Action Value. So, for 6 Cycles, the total Action Value will be 650.

Now, taking the example of the above-mentioned Seele again, her action value for 6 cycles will be 447.72. Dividing this value with the 6-turn Action Value, and then multiplying it by 6, we get 8.71. This means that Seele will have 8 total turns in the first 6 Turn Cycles, exactly as calculated in the Speed Breakpoint table above.

More Speed is Not Always Good in Honkai Star Rail

Characters Preferred Speeds

A common misconception new players get is that more speed is always better for their characters, as it allows more turns. This is not always true. Honkai Star Rail has a varied range of characters with different play styles. Some characters do better with more speed, while others do better with less speed.

For example, characters like Clara who deal the most damage after getting attacked by enemies, will prefer a low speed compared to the enemy and other characters. Similarly, most Sustain and Support characters do well with more speed, as it allows them to recharge their Ultimate quicker.

Main DPS units, other than Clara, can also benefit from more speed, however, they must be slower compared to the Support characters in your team. Otherwise, your Main DPS will miss out on the support buffs in the 0 Turn Cycle.

How to Add More Speed to Your Characters in HSR

Speed Boot Honkai Star Rail

Every character has a different base speed stat. The base Speed stat increases with character levels and is a good indicator if the character is good with low or high Speeds. For example, Clara has the lowest Base Speed stat, while Hanya, followed by Seele, has the highest.

Now, to add more Speed to the characters other than leveling them up, you need to add Speed stats on their Relics. Speed can be added as Main Stats on all Relic boots, which is the most sure shot way of hitting Speed Breakpoints in HSR. Besides, you can roll for Speed Sub-stats in relics, which is mostly based on RNG.
