- Google Trends releases its year-on-trend, disclosing all the top searches across various topics.
- For video games, Hogwarts Legacy tops the list, followed by The Last of Us.
- Suika Game is the surprise entry in the list and usual suspects Starfield and Balgur's Gate 3 are also on the list.
When people say 2023 was a great year for video games, it isn’t an exaggeration, and even Google Trends reveals the same. Google’s annual Year in Search report for this year is out, and it includes the most searched topics across various categories. In 2023, Year in Review also names the top ten most searched video games on Google, so let’s have a look at them.
The Year in Search 2023 report showcases every game frequently searched on Google. Some names included in the list are a no-brainer, while others come as a surprise. The list starts with Hogwarts Legacy dominating the top spot for the most searches across the platform.
The wizarding game became the most searched because of the controversy around Harry Potter’s author JK Rowling, and her stance on the transgender community. While discussions have always flared up over the months after its release, the searches surged the highest during its release week.
List of Most Searched Games in 2023
Of course, we have the usual suspects, Starfield and Baldur’s Gate 3, on the list. Here are the top 10 searches in video games for 2023, as per Google Trends:
- Hogwarts Legacy
- The Last of Us
- Connections
- Battlegrounds Mobile India
- Starfield
- Baldur’s Gate 3
- Suika Game
- Diablo IV
- Atomic Heart
- Sons of the Forest
Similarly, The Last of Us has ranked itself as the second-most searched video game on Google. Part of the reason for this could be the first season of the HBO show based on the game, along with the remake launching for PC. As you might know, the remake on PC had a painful launch. Hence, some searches could’ve come from disgruntled players trying to find fixes for the game.
Unfortunately, while The Last of Us 2 had a lot of searches, another prominent PlayStation game from this year doesn’t appear on the list. Spider-Man 2, which was one of the biggest launches for the PS5 this year, didn’t make the cut for the top ten searches on Google.
Diablo 4, the newest entry in the long-running action RPG, sits at the eighth position. While the game had a rough post-launch, things are slowly getting back on track with new, regular content updates.
At the bottom of the list is the sequel to Endnight’s 2018 survival horror game The Forest. Sons of the Forest was released to a lot of fanfare, with the fanbase celebrating the launch and newcomers taking up interest in the game. Given its gameplay, the searches probably happened based on info related to the game.
One of the more surprising searches comes for the Suika game. For those who don’t know, Suika is a physics-based Tetris-like game where you try to score as many points as possible. Suika became popular around October after popular VTubers from HoloLive and Nijisanji, among others, started playing the game on stream. It sits at the seventh position in the trends list.
So, what are your thoughts on the list? Do you agree with the games mentioned in the list of 2023 Google Trends? Which game surprised you, and do you think other games should’ve made the list? Let us know in the comments below.
