After teasing custom AI chatbots called Gemini Gems at Google I/O 2024, the search giant has now finally released it. Gems are basically custom chatbots that you can build and refine for different roles like fitness guide, coding assistant, translator, etc. It’s similar to custom GPTs available on ChatGPT.
The feature is not free, though. You need a Gemini Advanced subscription that costs $20 per month to be able to create and use custom Gems. Google has already created a few custom Gems such as Brainstormer to find fresh ideas, Career Guide to help you with career goals, Coding Partner for coding assistance, Learning Coach to practice new concepts, and Writing Editor to improve your writing.
If these Gems don’t match your requirements, you can create one just for yourself. Having said that, there is a limitation. Gemini Gems only lets you add custom instructions. There is no option to upload files, which would have added extra knowledge outside the LLM’s training data and made Gems more personal and specific to your use case.
OpenAI’s custom GPTs let you upload files and use the knowledge from your personal files to answer queries. Nevertheless, if you are interested in creating custom Gems on Gemini, here are the steps to follow.
How to Create a Custom Gemini AI Chatbot
Make sure you have subscribed to Gemini Advanced. Gems is a premium feature, available only to paid users.
- Head over to Gem Manager on Gemini (website) and click on New Gem.
- Now, give a name to your custom Gem and add custom instructions right below.
- For example, I am creating a custom Gem that has expertise in dietary management for weight loss. I have added the following custom instructions.
You are an expert nutritionist in weight loss. Follow the best global guidance on maintaining balanced diet that reduces weight gradually. Focus on calorie intake, meal timing, portion control, and overall lifestyle. I am from India and my current weight is 98 kg. My BMI is 30.
- Before saving the custom chatbot, you can chat with it to try it out. Once you are done refining the instructions, click on Save.
- Now, you can talk to your custom Gem whenever you want on Gemini.
