A custom ROM is one of the ways by which you can revive your old Phone that's no longer supported by the manufacturer. However, if you want to avoid Google services and its data tracking, you could give GrapheneOS a try.
Xiaomi has changed its bootloader unlock policy. The new policy restricts it to only one device a year, per account. This was previously 3 devices per year, per account. The new policy could immensely slow down the development process and lead to developers prioritizing some devices over others.
