If I asked you to name the best camera smartphone off the top of your head, your answer would be the iPhone 16 Pro Max, the Galaxy S24 Ultra, or the Pixel 9 Pro. But I bet Oppo isn’t on your radar, despite making some of the best camera-centric smartphones with their Find series. Well, I had the opportunity to test out the new Oppo Find X8 Pro, and after taking the phone on some after-hours adventures with me, here are my initial thoughts on the device and its cameras.

Goes Tactical in Style and Features
We have the Space Black version of the Oppo Find X8 Pro with us, and I was surprised to see that it doesn’t carry any of the design charms we have grown to love from the previous models of the Find series. The phone is covered in a single sheet of matte black glass at the back with rounded metal sides. I was not expecting Oppo to deliver a stealthy-clad phone, but I grew an appreciation for its design, even if it’s a little bland, after giving it a few hours.
The minimal design of the phone looks suave and the huge camera bulge adds to its aesthetics. I can easily imagine any on-screen spy in a three-piece suit pulling it out of their pocket. And it can easily keep up with their action-packed lifestyle given the IP68 + IP69 certification against dust and water protection.
The Oppo Find X8 Pro has a large footprint given its 6.8-inch display and 215 grams weight, but the rounded corners make it easy to grip without digging into my hands. I am glad Oppo didn’t go for flat edges like most other smartphones these days. Taking a tour around the device, you get the alert slider on the left, and the power and volume buttons on the right, followed by a capacitive camera button.
I love Oppo’s implementation of the camera button as it requires you to double-press it in quick succession to activate it. So the camera never turned on accidentally in my pocket or while using it on the daily. It also doubles as a zoom slider but only when the phone is in a landscape position. And that makes sense because the zoom controls are more accessible at the bottom of the camera UI during portrait orientation.
Oppo’s design team put more thought into this than a certain fruit-shaped brand that also launched a device with a similar feature this year.
On the front is a gorgeous 1.5k LTPO AMOLED display, which is ever so slightly curved on all four sides. This keeps the premium look that curved glass phones had, while also eliminating the accidental touch issues many faced with them. Oppo was generous enough to ship the phone with a screen guard applied, however, there is Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2 protection in case you were wondering.
I ended up watching Transformers One on the Oppo X8 Pro and it looked breathtaking. The colors were vibrant and the details sharp. The brightness cranks up to 4500 nits with HDR, and I don’t generally trust the advertised numbers. But in my real-life tests, the contents on the display were easily visible; though I couldn’t test it in harsh sunlight due to my city’s foggy weather.
But when I went back home, I cranked up its stereo speaker setup to the max and was surprised by how loud the phone got. I didn’t feel the need to pull out my Bluetooth speaker. But understandably, it was the bottom grill that was doing most of the heavy lifting here.
Photos that Demand a Closer Look
Oppo’s Find X series is commonly known for its design and cameras. Now that we have discussed the former, it is time to go over the latter. You get an array of four powerful cameras at the back of the Oppo Find X8 Pro similar to the Find X7 Ultra.
It has a Sony LYT808 50MP main sensor which takes good photos whether it is day or night. There is a bit of overprocessing happening compared to what you see in the viewfinder and the result that you get after taking the shot. But you end up with a photo that captures all the details beautifully without oversharpening the image. The shadows are well taken care of, and so are the highlights.
You can see for yourself how well it captures indoor environments, and the camera doesn’t falter at night either. I spend a good amount of time roaming around the iconic attractions of Delhi at night, and the results speak for themselves. Though I did feel that it had issues handling the exposure at times, the overall image turned out great.
Then, we have the 50MP ultra-wide lens with a 120-degree FOV (field of view). This lens is often overlooked by manufacturers, so the results are inconsistent and lack detail. But that is definitely not the case here. Not only is there color parity with the primary lens, but the photos are rich in detail even in dimly lit situations, as you can see from the images.
But of course, the stars of the show are the two telephoto lenses that let you zoom up to 120x. We have a 73mm Sony LYT600 50MP lens and another 135mm Sony IMX858 50MP lens on the back. I can’t tell you how satisfying it is to take close-up photos of faraway subjects and the cameras on the X8 Pro scratched that itch for me.
They pick up ample detail, whether we are talking about daylight shots or at night. Even the foggy weather couldn’t be a barrier to some of the beautiful images I clicked with these cameras.
They retain the color science of the other two lenses and handle highlights and shadows quite well. The dynamic range is on point here, though the problems in exposure are still present here. But one look at the 120x or even the 60x scoped-in shots will be enough to make you forget about those concerns.
There is some AI processing at play for sure, but the quality of the results speaks for itself. Just to give you a glimpse of the 120x zoom on this device, here’s a normal shot and the 120x shot.
The front 32MP selfie shooter isn’t a slouch either. It captures natural-looking photos without any harsh skin smoothening effect. It accurately maps out the subjects during portrait shots. The results turned out so good that at times I thought it placed cutouts of my face on the blurred background.
Finally, before I end this segment, I must mention that all cameras can record in 4K @ 60 FPS with Dolby Vision support. The videos I captured with the Find X8 Pro were mostly at night so there was some visible noise, but the footage was smooth and the post-processing didn’t let go of the details.
Scores an A in Performance and Battery
The Oppo Find X8 Pro comes with the new MediaTek Dimensity 9400, which is their new flagship processor. We also saw it in the Vivo X200 Pro mini (first impressions) and the performance is on just another level. It is paired with 16GB LPDDR5X RAM and 512GB UFS 4.0 storage. Now before playing some games, I ran a fair share of benchmarks.
What surprised me was the phone didn’t throttle much during the 15-minute CPU throttling test. And after running all the benchmarks, the phone only touched 35 degrees Celsius. But you can take a look at the rest of the results below.
Now I ran some of my favorite games starting with COD Mobile. I played it at Medium + Ultra graphics which lets you push 120FPS and the phone sticks to that framerate no matter how tense the situation gets within the game itself. Changing the settings to Max + Max graphics lets you do around 50-55FPS but then again, you get a pretty comfortable gaming experience.
I also played PUBG, and like COD Mobile, the gameplay was smooth and the phone didn’t even sweat while playing it. I got 90FPS with Smooth + Extreme settings, and around 45-50 with the Ultra HDR option.
Moving on to Genshin Impact, the Dimensity 9400 easily pushed 60 FPS on that game as well. I had the graphics set to high and while the frame rate dipped down to 50 at times, it caught up to 60 again. Cranking down the visuals did give me a solid 60 but it is commendable how well this chipset can handle such high-end games with ease.
Aside from games, the general day-to-day experience was also quick, snappy, and fluid which is also in part thanks to the new ColorOS 15 based on Android 15. The app animations are snappy, and so is the RAM management which is well-optimized. The new customization options for the lockscreen kept me busy tuning the phone’s aesthetics to my liking for a good half an hour.
I also tried their new AI features like the writing tool to help me write some important emails in a jiffy, the summary option to summarise some articles for research, and finally their AI studio for just some after-hour fun. All in all, the new software offers one of the best ColorOS experiences I have had to date. And I wish some of the old Oppo phones also get to enjoy these AI features.
Lastly, the Oppo Find X8 Pro features a surprisingly large 5910mAh battery. It became a task to drain down to 0 during my two days of usage. Even after taking it out for photo samples, playing games, and running benchmarks, the phone was ready to let go easy. You can expect the phone to last for around 1 and a half to two days depending on your usage. And the provided 80W charger should be able to top it up in no time.
Oppo Find X8 Pro: Bland Design But a Fantastic Camera
I gave up on the idea of a perfect phone quite a while ago. There is always one thing or the other, be it the display, design, camera, performance, or software. However, the Find X8 Pro comes close to being the perfect one compared to any other phone I have used or tested in my time. The sleek and stealthy matte design reminds me of the good old days of the OnePlus 3T from Oppo’s sister brand. The display and the cameras are near perfection. And there is abundant performance for someone like me.
There is so much to like about this device that I couldn’t point out just one highlight. But if I have to pick one then the cameras are the first thing to cross my mind. They just need a slight tuning, and I can already see myself carrying them as my primary shooter. But even in its current state, the Oppo Find X8 Pro, priced at 1,199 Euros, is the overall best flagship smartphone and sets a benchmark for me to test upcoming flagships against it.
