Currency Wars is a permanent game mode with the rewards, mechanics, and enemies resetting after a certain number of days, similar to the other game modes. So, check our complete HSR Currency Wars guide and learn how to master it before everyone else.

How to Play Currency Wars in Honkai Star Rail

Currency Wars is a completely new game mode in Honkai Star Rail, and it is largely different from the other game modes introduced in the game. It is also more accessible compared to Anomaly Arbitration. Although many of the mechanics are similar, the gameplay is distinct enough that players will have to learn how to play it from scratch. Here is a complete guide on everything you need to account for in HSR Currency Wars.

How to Get Characters in Currency Wars

First of all, you are likely wondering how to get characters in Currency Wars. The game provides every character to the player, irrespective of whether they own it or not. Also, if the player owns the character, then their character’s progression data will be carried over. Like Divergent Universe, if you own the character but they lack the minimum gear requirement for the game mode, the game will automatically replace them with the template version.

Now, players cannot preset these characters, but have to recruit them in the game using Coins. These Coins can be obtained by winning matches or through other rewards. You will have to ration these Coins in each round so that you have the ideal set of characters for the final boss.

On-field and Off-field Characters

Now, Currency Wars introduces a 10-person team format, instead of the usual 4-person team that HSR players are familiar with. The battlefield in Currency Wars is separated into on-field and off-field. Every character is also separated into on-field and off-field categories, although some are considered to be both.

Although you can place any character in both the planes, however, their unique skills would only activate in their proper place. For example, Jade is an off-field character, and placing her in the off-field section will unlock her Debt Collector ability. Other than that, off-field and on-field characters also have synergies. Like, Jade’s Deb Collector synergizes with Herta when she is placed as an on-field character.

Bond Effects and Strategies

Other than normal character synergies, Currency Wars also introduces Bond Effects and Strategies. Bonds are basically factions from Zenless Zone Zero. When a certain number of characters have the same Bond, they will unlock that unique Bond skill. For example, the Xianzhou Bond includes Qinque, Tingyun, Huohuo, Fugue, Fu Xuan, Yanqing, and Jing Yuan as characters. When you have these characters recruited together, they will summon the Lightning Lord, who will attack all enemies. All the Bond information has been given in a section below, so check that out for more information.

Other than Bonds, Currency Wars will also have Strategies. These are like specific buffs depending on your team composition and can empower your bond effects as well. For example, one Strategy may increase the amount of damage dealt by AoE attacks when a certain number of AoE characters are on the team.

Character Rarity and Cost

Unlike the normal character rarity of 4-star and 5-star, Currency Wars has its own separate system. The characters are mainly divided into five colors, each having a different Gold cost to recruit. These five colors are Gold, Purple, Blue, Green, and Grey, with the highest rarity being Gold and the lowest being Grey. Here is a cost breakdown for the character colors:

  • Gold: 5 Coins
  • Purple: 4 Coins
  • Blue: 3 Coins
  • Green: 2 Coins
  • Grey: 1 Coin

Now, Gold characters have a stronger base kit, but they have less development potential and a higher cost. Compared to that, the Grey characters have the weakest base kit but have a strong developing potential. For example, Herta is a grey character, but her kit improves based on the number of enemies she defeats. This can potentially make her a very strong character in the end fights if you have placed her at the start and allowed her to defeat enemies throughout the fight. Also, Gold characters cannot be recruited from the get-go. Players must first level up during the battle to unlock higher color cards.

Now, other than character colors, there is also a rarity mechanic. Each character starts as a 1-star rarity. When you recruit more of the same characters, the rarity of the purchased character increases, also improving their base kit. In many cases, a 3-star Grey character can be better than a 1-star Gold character.

Gears

Currency Wars also has a Gears mechanic, which are additional items that can be equipped on the characters, giving them additional effects or simply increasing their stats. This is similar to the Relic mechanic, but Card game players would better relate to it as support cards.

How to Win in Currency Wars

In Currency Wars, players must battle with Face Competitors. Each version of the Currency War would have three Face Competitors at a time, who are bosses like the other game modes have in Honkai Star Rail. Each of the Face Competitors would have multiple rounds that you must clear first to then reach the final boss. Defeating all the Face Competitors in Currency Wars would make you win in the game, letting you earn more coins, increasing your rank, and unlocking more rewards.
