How to Cancel Your Spotify Premium Subscription

Spotify is one of the most widely popular music streaming platforms on the planet. Among all the music streaming services, Spotify easily leads the pack. And why wouldn’t it? Spotify has refined itself over the years to cater to the end-user experience. From useful Spotify tips and tricks to different ways to know your Spotify listening data. You can create cool Spotify Icebergs, and Spotify pie charts, and view the customary year-end Spotify Wrapped. So, it would take a lot for any user to cancel their Spotify Premium subscription and switch music streaming services.

The subscription costs or Spotify still struggling to roll out Hi-Fi services could be one of the reasons. Or, the company releasing a TikTok-like feed to recommend new music could be another. Why else would you want to cancel your Spotify Premium subscription? No one likes listening to ads more than songs. Certainly not me! Well, whatever may be your reason, it’s time to learn how to unsubscribe from Spotify Premium.

Cancel Your Spotify Premium Subscription from Web or PC

On your Windows or macOS computer, you need to use the Spotify website to cancel your subscription. For reference, I’m using Google Chrome on my iMac for this tutorial. So, without any further delay, let me show you how it’s done.

1. Log into your Spotify account and click your profile icon in the top right corner.

2. From the drop-down menu, select “Account.”

3. From your Account Overview page, scroll down to the “Your plan” section. Here, click on “Change plan.”

4. At the end of the “Change Plan” screen, click on “Cancel Premium” in the “Spotify Free” section.

5. It will redirect you to a confirmation window. From that window, click on “Continue to cancel” to unsubscribe from Spotify Premium on Windows and Mac.

Cancel Your Spotify Premium Subscription on Android & iOS

Natively, the Spotify app on Android and iOS does not allow you to unsubscribe from the Premium subscription tier. On your smartphone as well, you will have to visit the official website to unsubscribe from Spotify Premium. Again, you can use any web browser of your choice to do so, and follow the steps below:

1. Sign in to your Spotify account.

2. Click on the “settings” (cog icon) at the top right corner of your screen.

3. From the drop-down menu, select “View Account.”

4. Then, click on “Change plan” from the Account Overview page.

5. On the next page, scroll down to the “Spotify Free” section and tap on “Cancel Premium.”

6. You will be redirected to a confirmation page. Click on “Continue to cancel” to cancel your Spotify Premium subscription. You might need to confirm your decision once again.

What Happens When You Cancel Your Spotify Premium Subscription

Canceling your Spotify Premium subscription doesn’t mean you cannot listen to music using Spotify. You will still be able to listen to your favorite songs and access your playlists; they are not deleted. However, the biggest difference you will notice right off the bat is “ads.” You will have to hear ads after every 15 minutes of your listening session. I am listing down some of the other downgrades that you will notice with Spotify’s free plan:

  1. You won’t be able to download and save songs for offline listening anymore.
  2. All your previously offline songs will be made unavailable.
  3. You will lose access to high-quality music streaming capabilities.
  4. You will now lose the ability to conduct “Group Sessions”.
  5. You will be only able to use up to 1 device for music streaming on the free plan tier.
  6. With Spotify free, the maximum streaming bitrate is 128 kbps on the web and 160 kbps on mobile and web apps.
  7. You won’t be able to skip tracks endlessly with Spotify’s free tier.
  8. You won’t be able to select specific songs for playback.
  9. With the free plan, you are stuck with only the “Shuffle mode” in your playlist.
  10. On the mobile app, you will be unable to play Albums in full, from front to back in case you are on the free tier.
  11. If you are someone who travels extensively abroad, Spotify Premium will stop working for you after 14 days.

With you canceling your Spotify subscription, it is highly likely that you are shifting to some other music streaming platform. In that case, I will recommend you transfer your Spotify playlists to your preferred platform and delete your Spotify account completely. Comment down below if you face any issues.
