How to Craft Paintings in Minecraft

Paintings are not like banner patterns or armor trims in Minecraft. You cannot craft any specific painting with certain items. You can make a universal painting item using the crafting table with 8 sticks and one wool of any color.

Once you have the painting item, you should pay attention to the painting size you want to place. By right-clicking the vertical surface of solid blocks with a painting, the biggest possible painting will be placed.

So, if you have a large 5×5 wall, only the biggest paintings will appear. To create smaller and specific paintings, you need to limit the space you have. This is most frequently done with temporary blocks like dirt. Place the dirt in order to make the available area smaller.

You don’t need to place strips of dirt, as just one block on each side will be enough to make a smaller painting. The placed painting will be random every time. So, you may need to do lots of placing and breaking before finally having the painting you want in place. If you’re in the creative mode, you can easily view different paintings, since the names and sizes are displayed in the creative inventory.

With that, you have learned about all the paintings, even the new ones that have been added in the latest Minecraft 1.21 update. As you can imagine, they are highly diverse and can fit into any theme you create. Though admittedly, most paintings have some sort of a dark theme to them, so they will best suit darker styles. With that said, what is your favorite painting?

What is the best painting?

Just like with all art, best paintings in this lovely blocky game are a matter of opinion. Some people love the dark spooky painting designs in many Kristoffer Zetterstrand paintings. My personal favorites are Lowmist and Passage.

Can you get custom paintings?

Yes, you can. Lucky for you, we’ve already got a perfect guide for making custom paintings, so feel free to check it out.

Can you still walk through paintings?

Yes, you can. Make a hole in the wall and place signs, as they don’t have a hitbox. Then, cover the hole with a painting and you’re free to walk through.
