There is no denying the fact that Red Dead Redemption 2 is one of the best video games of all time. Whether it is the classic story that numbs your eyes or the brutal bloodbaths, the Rockstar-developed game has it all. With Grand Theft Auto 6 coming in 2026 and RDR 2 turning seven, it’s the perfect moment to look back. Here are 7 features GTA 6 should borrow from RDR 2 to make the wait absolutely worth it.
1. Realism Through Visual Progression
The dynamic hair growth system in RDR 2 adds a layer of visual realism rarely seen in open-world games. Unlike in GTA 5, where hair changes occur instantly after a barber visit, the gradual growth and the use of tonics to accelerate this process add to the game’s immersion.
Applying this system in GTA 6 would believably enhance character personalization, especially since trailers already hint at varying hair lengths for protagonists Jason and Lucia. This subtle detail could deepen players’ connection to the GTA 6 characters and the game world.

2. Enhanced Social Mechanics for Interaction Depth
The ability to greet or antagonize NPCs, a feature beloved in RDR 2, creates dynamic and often humorous social interactions. This mechanic could be particularly effective in GTA 6’s modern urban settings. For example, like beaches or clubs, where the variety and complexity of NPC behaviors would be greater than in the Wild West.
Such interactions could lead to spontaneous fights or friendships. This will increase player engagement and provide emergent gameplay moments and encounters that feel organic rather than scripted.
3. Relationship Dynamics Over Honor Systems
While RDR 2’s honor system tracked morality, GTA 6 might benefit more from a relationship bar reflecting the protagonists’ interpersonal connections, such as between Jason and Lucia. This system could influence storylines and gameplay elements, offering consequences for actions like cheating or flirting.
Moreover, the choices that matter will make people think twice before selecting their next move. This would add realism and emotional stakes. RDR 2’s honor system-style approach aligns better with a contemporary setting where personal relationships are central to narrative and player choice.
4. Hunting as a Meaningful Side Activity
Hunting in RDR 2 was not just a mini-game but a deeply integrated system involving tracking, harvesting, crafting, and selling. The confirmation of NPC hunting in GTA 6 previews a similar feature that suits its dynamic environments, like swamps and rural areas. There can be crocodile hunting for extra cash, or simple bird hunting for a quick snack.
We have already seen it in the GTA 6 trailer 2 and the in-game screenshots. This feature would diversify gameplay, provide alternative income streams, and enrich the game’s ecosystem, making the world feel alive and interactive beyond traditional missions and combat. But above them all, it will add more to the list of GTA 6 activities that are beyond just progressing the story.
5. Innovative Transportation Choices Beyond Fast Travel
Introducing horses into a modern open world may seem anachronistic, but could add a layer of fun and novelty. Riding horses through urban areas like Vice City would create amusing NPC reactions and social media moments within the game’s universe. This reflects Rockstar’s skill at blending realism with humor and could serve as a nostalgic nod to longtime fans.
The funny addition will showcase their commitment to creative, surprising gameplay elements. With many GTA 6 vehicles already being confirmed, it will be great to have some transportation options right out of RDR 2’s books. Just imagine Lucia on a horse going on the mission to save Jason; absolute cinema!
6. Weapon Management and Dual Wielding
Speaking of cinema, what Hollywood crime story is it without great action, right? That is where I believe GTA 6 should make things more realistic. The limited weapon-carrying system in RDR 2, where players had to choose which weapons to carry and could store others on their horse, encouraged strategic planning.
In contrast, GTA 5’s unrealistic ability to carry a vast arsenal at once reduced immersion. GTA 6 appears set to adopt a similar system involving weapon storage in vehicles, based on leaked footage. This design encourages thoughtful preparation before missions, adds tension to encounters, and enhances realism. On top of that, if we get the dual-wielding of RDR 2 in GTA 6, I am sure players will rush to unlock it first just to feel like a real-life action star in a video game.
7. Dynamic Weather and Environmental Effects
RDR 2’s weather system was praised for its beauty and realism. Undeniably, it remains one of the most effective ways to create a dynamic environment in an open-world RPG. It features vibrant clouds, rain, snow, and lightning. This is more than just a linear representation of different weather types.
GTA 6’s tropical setting allows Rockstar to build on this foundation, incorporating storms, lightning, and volumetric clouds to produce breathtaking visuals and immersive environments. This level of detail will particularly enrich aerial gameplay, making flying scenes spectacular and adding atmospheric depth to the game world. And who knows, we might see more wildlife slither in the city due to weather mishmashes.
These are all the RDR 2 features we think GTA 6 should borrow. There are many other RPG features GTA 6 can include in the game for better gameplay, too.
