- The first GTA 6 trailer confirmed its release on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S consoles.
- GTA 6 will not be available on older generation consoles like the PS4 and Xbox One.
- The game's absence on older consoles is likely due to the rumored large map and significant visual enhancements in GTA 6.
The next Grand Theft Auto game is launching soon, and players worldwide are getting ready for the GTA 6 release. And as per the developers, it will be a massive upgrade from GTA 5. Unfortunately, as exciting as it might sound, it also means that many previous-gen platforms might not support GTA 6. Whether it is in terms of graphics or features, only time will tell. So, for now, let’s try to figure out whether GTA 6 will come to PS4 and Xbox One or not.
Is GTA 6 Coming to PS4 & Xbox One?
Let’s begin with a straight answer. No, GTA 6 will not be coming to PS4 and Xbox One. That is the best answer for all old-gen console users. Rockstar confirmed this in the first GTA 6 trailer. Even the official Grand Theft Auto 6 website now shows the platforms for the game. Rockstar said the upcoming GTA game will launch for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S in fall 2025.
Is GTA 6 Next-Gen Only and Why?
Yes, according to Rockstar Games’ confirmation, their most ambitious project so far is made only for next-gen consoles. You won’t get the upcoming Grand Theft Auto on PS4 or Xbox One. But what is the reason behind that?
Well, you might have already seen the looks of GTA 6 and how the large Vice City was shaped up for the game. One of the key reasons behind GTA 6 being exclusive to the new generation is the large GTA 6 map.

Grand Theft Auto 6’s sheer scale and visual fidelity will undoubtedly overwhelm the capabilities of the Xbox One and PS4. Even the PS4 Slim will not be able to handle the game if we just believe the required GTA 6 specs rumors.
Leaks suggest its map, at 48.2 square miles, nearly doubles GTA 5’s San Andreas (29.2 square miles). The trailer’s photorealistic graphics further indicate a demand for powerful hardware that older, decade-old consoles cannot meet.
Even running GTA 5 strains these systems, with lengthy load times for GTA Online forcing Rockstar to remove features. With GTA 5 requirements reaching higher levels, Rockstar is likely concerned about such old systems. Therefore, despite the nostalgia, it’s clear why GTA 6 is skipping the PS4 and Xbox One—they just can’t handle it.
Will GTA 6 Run on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S?
Rockstar has already confirmed that the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S can run GTA 6. However, some rumors suggest that the game will barely reach 60 frames. Mike York, a Rockstar employee who used to work as an animator in the company, said, ‘I don’t know if they’ll be able to pull off 60 FPS.
He also said that Rockstar prioritized the quality of gameplay at 30 FPS rather than forcing 60 FPS without the right experience. With the PS5 Pro here, we can expect that Rockstar Games will add an enhanced mode for the console, using the full power of the PSSR for higher quality and frames in GTA 6.
Another former artist confirmed GTA 6 to have 60 fps mode. While I don’t mind solid gameplay at 30 fps in GTA 6, my curiosity is about how the Xbox Series S will perform. We all know the Series S is much lower in specs and can barely run current-gen games. With GTA 6 being so demanding, we might see fewer textures and features for the GTA 6 Series S edition.
With no PC version ready for the launch and neither PS4 nor Xbox One being on the cards, GTA 6 has seemed to embrace the new generation of consoles fully. What are your thoughts on this? Do tell us in the comments below.
