Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge is Here to Kickstart 2025’s Slim Phone Trend

In Short
  • Samsung has finally launched the Galaxy S25 Slim, and it's just 5.84 mm thick.
  • It features Snapdragon 8 Elite SoC, 12 GB LPDDR5X RAM, and up to 512 GB UFS 4.0 storage.
  • The phone comes in three colors Blue, Jet Black, and Silver, and is now available for preorder.

With the dawn of AI among us, you might doubt if hardware innovations have taken a hard backseat. But phone manufacturers are starting to think outside the AI bubble to offer a little more. Among recent innovations like packing in bigger batteries and making small devices, Samsung’s taking a different approach. To have an early edge over Apple, Samsung has launched the world’s thinnest phone yet — the Galaxy S25 Edge. Here are all of its specifications, how it stacks up against the existing devices, and all the tradeoffs you could expect if you want to own one.

The Slim Phone Wars Begin with the Galaxy S25 Edge

Starting with the selling point of the Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge, its design. At just 5.84 mm thick and weighing 163 grams. The phone features Gorilla Glass Ceramic 2 at the front, a titanium frame, and Gorilla Glass Victus 2 at the back, all while being IP68-rated. The display is a 6.7-inch QHD+ 2X AMOLED with a 120Hz refresh rate, and 2600 nits peak brightness.

Performance-wise, it features the Snapdragon 8 Elite SoC (benchmarks), and unlike what rumors suggested, it’s the vanilla 8-core variant and not the 7-core one. Complementing the same is 12 GB LPDDR5X RAM, and UFS 4.0 storage. Powering the internals is a 3900 mAh battery that’s rated to charge at 25W. The phone does have wireless charging, but Samsung hasn’t mentioned the exact wattage.

The main camera is a 200MP wide f/1.7 snapper with a sensor size of 1/1.56″. The secondary sensor is a 12MP ultrawide f/2.2 snapper. The front camera is also a 12MP f/2.2 snapper.

Connectivity options include a USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-C port with support for display out for Samsung DeX, Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 5.4, UWB support, and an Ultrasonic under-display fingerprint sensor.

What Makes the Galaxy S25 Edge Stand Out?

The 5.84 mm thickness makes the Galaxy S25 Edge the slimmest phone in the world. The slimness makes it compact and easy to carry around. Although more niche than small phones, there’s still a market for slim devices, and the Galaxy S25 Edge fits right in.

Modern Android devices have become relatively slim thanks to Silicon Carbon batteries, but most still turn out to be 8–8.5 mm in thickness. A difference of merely 2 mm might not sound that huge, but it completely changes the in-hand feel of the device, similar to jumping from a 6.7-inch device to a 6.3-inches. Which is why I compared them to compact phones.

The recently-launched iQOO 13 at 8.13 mm thickness and the OnePlus 13T at 8.2 mm are the next slimmest Android devices. OPPO’s latest foldable, the Find N5, is 8.8 mm thick when folded and just 4.21 mm when unfolded, but it’s a completely different form factor. We have rumors of Samsung topping Find N5’s thin-ness with the upcoming Z Fold 7, which is rumored to be 3.9 mm thick when unfolded (vs 4.1 mm). This makes it evident that 2025 could be the year of Slim phones, at least when it comes to Samsung phones.

All things considered, the Galaxy S25 Edge’s 5.84 mm thickness is commendable on Samsung’s part and will be THE slimmest slab phone to get for quite a while until Apple’s iPhone 17 Air launch. Most associate the slim form factor with premium feel, while others rave about its portability. If you deeply care about either traits, it could be for you.

The S25 Edge could act as a catalyst for the potential emergence of new slim phones in the Android world. And with Apple trying their hands on a 5.5 mm thick iPhone 17 Air (Link), we might see other Android manufacturers join Samsung and Apple’s lead. Well, then we’ll at least have something new to talk about instead of “disruptive” AI features.

Being Thinnest Has Its Trade-offs

Let’s be honest, a 3900 mAh battery won’t do wonders for the phone’s screen-on time and might as well be the biggest pain point. Which makes us think, perhaps Samsung shouldn’t have made haste and released a phone after thoroughly testing Silicon Carbon batteries.

We’ve already seen Tecno come up with its Slim Spark concept in MWC. It measured 5.75 mm in thickness while still featuring a whopping 5200 mAh battery. Samsung could have solved a massive pain point with Silicon Carbon batteries. But alas, the plan was to beat Apple to the punch, and we’d like to think Samsung succeeded.

The lack of space to accommodate a telephoto sensor is another drawback of the slim form factor. Besides, the scrutiny around the structural integrity is another big factor to consider.

While it may not have the biggest battery or the most versatile camera, it is the slimmest flagship slab phone on the market. That alone makes it a standout in the current Android phone market. The Galaxy S25 Edge might not be perfect, but it could motivate others to follow the road to slim phone perfection.
