How to Enable Two Step Verification in WhatsApp

WhatsApp has been busy enhancing the security in its app. The Facebook-owned company enabled end-to-end encryption in the app last year and now, it has introduced two-step verification. WhatsApp is rolling out two-step verification in its iPhone, Android and Windows app. The new security feature will make sure that no one can set up your WhatsApp account with just your mobile number. We’ll definitely recommend you to set it up on your WhatsApp account and to help you out, here are the steps to enable two-step verification in WhatsApp:

1. Open WhatsApp Messenger on your iPhone, Android smartphone or Windows smartphone. Then, head to WhatsApp Settings->Account->Two-step verification.

2. Here, tap on “Enable” and then, enter the 6-digit passcode, which you will be prompted to enter when setting up WhatsApp afresh. Tap “Next” and confirm the passcode again.

3. Once done, you can enter the recovery email address, where you can get a link to reset the passcode in case you forget it. You can choose to skip this step but it’s still highly recommended if you don’t want to be locked out of your own WhatsApp account.

4. After you have confirmed the email address, WhatsApp two-step verification will be enabled. In the Two-step verification page, you will now find options to disable two-step verification, change passcode and email address.

Once two-step verification is enabled, you will have to enter the passcode you set whenever you are registering your phone number with WhatsApp again.

Points to Note in WhatsApp Two-Step Verification:

• If you don’t remember your passcode and you did not enter an email address, you will be able to reverify your WhatsApp account without the passcode after 7 days. However, you will end up loosing all your pending messages.

• You will not be able to reverify your WhatsApp account without the passcode, until it has been 7-days.

• WhatsApp will regularly prompt you to enter the passcode, so that you don’t forget it. This can only be disabled by disabling two-step verification.

• If your WhatsApp account is registered and verified without the passcode after 30 days of last using WhatsApp, your account will be deleted and a new one will be created.
