- You can install the new Copilot app on Windows 11 and older builds. It even supports Windows 10.
- I managed to extract the Copilot package from the 24H2 build and installed it on my PC. It's actually a web app.
- The app works fine, but there is no GPT-4o access as of now. You can't share your screen or voice chat with the model in a natural tone yet.
After the Surface event and MS Build 2024, Microsoft released the first preview of Windows 11 version 24H2 recently. Introduced to Insiders in the Release Preview channel, Build 26100.712 brings a new Copilot app to Windows 11, among other things. I got access to the new Copilot app on Windows 11, and it’s actually a web app which is not surprising given Microsoft’s recent history.
The app interface is similar to the new ChatGPT app on macOS. Microsoft says the new GPT-4o model, natural voice conversation, and vision capability are coming to Windows 11 pretty soon. In a few weeks, you will be able to share your screen and the Copilot app can assist you with several tasks including playing games, coding, and more.
I have successfully extracted the new Copilot app from Windows 11 version 24H2 and installed it on my PC which is running the 23H2 version. You can even install the new Copilot app on Windows 10 (Build 19041 or later), as I discovered the minimum OS version inside the app manifest file. Make sure you have Microsoft Edge installed on your PC.
Basically, you don’t have to join any insider channel to experience the Copilot app on Windows 11 or 10. Here is how to download and install the Copilot app right away.
Download and Install the Copilot App on Windows 11 and 10
- Go ahead and download the ZIP file for the Copilot app. I have not modified anything in the package.
- Next, right-click on the ZIP file and click on “Extract all“. A folder will be created in the same location.
- Open the extracted folder and delete the two files mentioned below.
AppxBlockMap.xml
AppxSignature.p7x
- After that, press the Start menu and search for “Use developer features“. Now, open it.
- Here, enable the “Developer Mode” toggle. This will allow you to sideload the Copilot app.
- Following that, open the extracted folder again and right-click anywhere in the folder to open the context menu.
- Now, press “Ctrl” and “Shift” together on the keyboard and click on “Open in Terminal”. This will open the Terminal with admin privilege in the same folder. Further, click on “Yes”.
- Finally, run the below command and the Copilot app will be installed on your PC. Do not delete the folder if you want to continue using the app.
powershell.exe Add-AppxPackage -Register AppxManifest.xml
- Open the Start menu and the new Copilot app will appear. You can also pin it to the taskbar. It’s fully functional and you can start chatting with Copilot without any issues.
So this is how you can download the Copilot app and install it on your Windows 11 and 10 PC. One of the noteworthy changes is that Copilot is no longer in preview. I am eagerly waiting for the GPT-4o model and natural voice conversation mode along with the screen sharing capability.
