How to Customize Bubbles in Google Messages

After several updates, features, and design changes, people have finally started warming up to the Google Messages app. I won’t lie, the RCS experience is quite good, and the app delivers a good messaging experience. However, the default blue bubbles might not be everyone’s cup of tea. So, if you want to customize the chat bubbles on Google Messages, keep reading as we show you how to.

Customize Google Messages Bubbles

Like Instagram and Facebook Messenger, you can change the theme and colors of the bubbles in Google Messages. However, it only works per conversation, there’s no option to change the entire theme system-wide. Still. It’s a fun way to personalize the texting experience with your loved ones.

  1. Open the Google Messages app on your phone.
  2. Head to the conversation where you want to change colors.
  3. Tap on their contact name at the top.
  4. Go to the Change colors option as shown in the image.
  5. Now pick a theme you like and tap on Confirm.

It will be automatically applied, and you can continue texting in fresh colors.

Note You can only change chat bubbles color in RCS messages. The “Change colors” option doesn’t appear for SMS messages.

Change Google Messages Theme on the Web

While the web version of Google Messages still shares almost identical experiences as the app, it does not have the option to change bubble colors. However, if you have difficulty reading the text then there is an option to change entire themes which can be helpful. Let’s take a look at how.

  1. Head over to Google Messages Web and log in with your account.
  2. Once logged in, click on the hamburger menu at the top left.
  3. Here, click on Settings.
  4. From here, you can pick between Light, Dark, System default, or High Contrast themes. Click on the option that suits your eyes. It will be applied instantly.

  • Go to Google Messages Web Settings
  • Select Google Messages Web Theme

This is how you can easily change the colors of bubbles and the chat theme on Google Messages. The fact that this option is limited to RCS chats is a bit annoying but given RCS is becoming widely available, even for iPhone users, this shouldn’t be an issue going forward.
