All Upper Moons in Demon Slayer (Explained)

Demon Slayer is one of the most beloved animanga series of the new age. This is a series that will make you admire not only the demon slayers but also the mighty demons. That’s because everyone in the Demon Slayer universe comes with their own set of miseries and stories. As Muzan’s Upper Moon demons play a pivotal role in the story, we have listed them based on their position (well, in descending order) below.

Upper Moon 6: Gyutaro and Daki

  • Status: Deceased

Even after losing their human lives, the brother-sister duo of Gyutaro and Daki didn’t part ways and shared the position of Upper Moon Six of the Twelve Kizuki. Gyutaro was a debt collector in his human life, who spent most of his days in poverty. So, eventually, he developed a hatred for people who got all the privileges and acted cruelly towards them. After turning into a demon, he was no different.

On the other hand, Daki was a prostitute as a human, so even after becoming a demon, she used to seduce her prey before killing them. Unlike other demons, she liked to feed on the people who, according to her, were attractive.

Gyutaro mostly liked to rest inside her sister’s body and let her handle the victims. However, when he felt that Daki could not tackle the opponent alone, he emerged from her body to kill the enemy with his sickle.

They enjoyed feeding on humans until they were slayed by Tenjen Uzui, Tanjiro, Inosuke, and Zenitsu in the Entertainment District Arc. Check out the Demon Slayer watch order if you’re unsure of where to start.

Kaigaku (Replacement)

Kaigaku is the second demon slayer to choose the path of evil, the first being Kokushibo, The Upper Moon One (more on him below). Kaigaku was a thief when he was a child and used to steal precious things from the temple. However, after learning about the demon’s existence, he decided to join the Demon Slayer Corps despite being someone who cannot stay loyal to anyone.

He, along with Zenitsu, was mentored by the former Thunder Hashira Jigoro Kuwajima. While Zenitsu learned Thunder Breathing: First Form in a few days, Kaigaku struggled to master it. So, despite realizing his inability, Kaigaku started believing that Kuwajima was biased towards him.

One day, Kaigaku went on a solo mission to slay the Upper Moon One, Kokushibo. However, the demon overwhelmed him without breaking a sweat, and seeing death in front of him, Kagaiku started begging for his life. That’s when Kokushibo turned him into a demon.

As Kaigaku proved himself a worthy demon, he got the position of Upper Moon Six after Daki and Gyutaro’s death.

Upper Moon 5: Gyokko

  • Status: Deceased

Gyokko had a strange fascination for art when he was a human, and after seeing his parents’ corpses, he started admiring dead bodies. Unlike the other demons, we didn’t get to witness his backstory in the series. However, when the Demon Slayer’s second official fanbook was published, we learned that Gyokko was a Fishman named Managi in his human life.

After he killed a child for teasing him, Gyokko was nearly killed by the poor kid’s parents. Unfortunately, he caught the sight of Muzan and became a demon.

Using the Blood Demon Art, Gyokko could create several pots and vases which Muzan sold at huge prices, so over time, the Upper Moon 5 became the favorite of the Demon Lord. That’s also one of the reasons why no other demon replaced him after he was killed by the Mist Hashira in the Swordsmith Village Arc.

Upper Moon 4: Hantengu

  • Status: Deceased

Out of every demon of Twelve Kizuki, Hantengu was the most hideous demon who could trick you with his elderly appearance. He was the main antagonist of the Swordsmith Village Arc. We must admit that even though he was slayed eventually, he did take demon slayers on a wild ride.

Hantengu was a cowardly demon who would create four clones with his Blood Demon Art and send them to the battleground and enjoy the conflict from behind.

Genya Shinazugawa admitted that Hantengu wasn’t an easy catch, as to get hold of the demon, one had to play cat and mouse with him. Besides that, Hantengu boasted a durable body to the extent that Genya’s bullet shots and the Nichirin Swords couldn’t do any harm to the demon. On top of everything, he remained unharmed when Tanjiro swung his bright red blade at him.

Nakime (Replacement)

Nakime replaced Hantengu and took the position of Upper Moon Four following his death. As a human, she was a musician who would kill people before heading towards her performances. Her husband was the first victim of Nakime’s strange habit.

Nakime does not have a tear-jerking backstory; she was just encountered by Muzan while she was searching for someone to kill before one of her performances. Her desire to kill people enticed the demon lord, and that’s why he turned Nakime into a demon.

Even though Nakime hasn’t yet come out to show her true potential in the anime, it’s worth noting that she isn’t sitting at the top fourth position of the Twelve Kizuki without any reason. Since she is the controller of the Infinity Castle, the Demon Slayer movie trilogy that was announced recently will surely bring her into action.

Upper Moon 3: Akaza

Akaza is the most hated demon in Muzan’s army as he is the one who killed the beloved Flame Hashira in the Mugen Train Arc. He is the first upper-ranked demon to show up in the series.

Despite being a stubborn and cruel demon, Akaza never fails to show respect to the one who would give him a hard time during a fight. Shockingly, he refuses to devour any woman and has taken special permission from Muzan regarding that.

Furthermore, Akaza sees himself as more powerful and worthy than the Upper Moon One and Two, and that’s why, he develops a hatred for them and starts seeing them as rivals. Akaza is a muscular demon who possesses several abilities, including fast reflexes and extraordinary regenerative abilities.

In the Mugen Train Arc, while combating Rengoku, Akaza is impressed by the Hashira’s impeccable fighting skills, so he proposes to him to become a demon. However, when Rengoku denies it, Akaza takes it as a sign of humiliation and doesn’t stop until he kills the Hashira.

Upper Moon 2: Doma

Among Muzan’s demon army, Doma is the most good-looking other than Muzan. He is one of the demons who is somewhat similar to Muzan in terms of personality. Doma might appear as a friendly individual, but deep inside, he is a sadistic being who likes to see his prey suffer before killing them once and for all. When he was a human, he couldn’t feel basic emotions, and in his demon form, he was no different.

Unlike Akaza, Doma loves to feed on females as he finds them packed with the nutrients that a man lacks. He came face-to-face with Kanae Kocho, the late Flower Hashira, and fatally wounded her before fleeing the scene. He decided to save his skin from the sun instead of devouring her.

Upper Moon Two comes with a special ability to generate ice from his body and use it to attack enemies. Besides that, he cannot only use his healing abilities on himself but on others as well, and this power certainly makes him the most valuable minion of Muzan.

Upper Moon 1: Kokushibo

Kokushibo is second to Muzan in terms of power as he is the one who has the highest concentration of Muzan’s blood. He was the brother of Yoriichi, the most powerful demon slayer and the inventor of the Breathing Styles. Kokushibo and Yoriichi were demon slayers and both of them had their own unique powers and abilities.

Kokushibo was an impeccable swordsman, but due to unknown reasons, he was always envious of Yoriichi. His jealousy towards his brother kept growing and he started believing that he would not be able to surpass Yoriichi in this life, so he chose to become a demon.

Kokushibo was the inventor of Moon Breathing in his human life, and when his Blood Demon Art gets combined with his breathing style, he becomes invincible.
