I am someone who usually picks up any random TV show or movie that appears on the Netflix top 10 charts. So, being a horror enthusiast, I decided to watch Tarot, a 2024 horror movie currently sitting in the top third position on the streaming platform. The movie revolves around seven teenagers who decide to spend one of their friends’ birthdays in a spooky house. However, like many other teen horror movies on Netflix, we see them doing exactly the same thing they must not pursue.
Is Tarot Worth Watching
If you love to watch teen dramas or movies, you should give it a try. But if you are someone who fancies horror content featured in Fear Street Trilogy, then it’s best that you sleep on it.
Tarot brings nothing new to the table. We get to see the same old story that has been around for decades: a group of friends, a creepy place, and some stupid decisions. That’s what the movie is all about. I had a hard time recalling the characters’ names even after watching the entire movie because the film didn’t give me a chance to know them.
The movie begins with the celebration of Elise’s (Larson Thompson) birthday, who wanted our lead lady, Haley (Harriet Slater), to read her horoscope using the deck of tarot cards they found in the spooky place. I mean, who does that? I would never do that on any of my birthdays or any other day; I would rather spend the day partying with my friends. Regardless, a bad decision that’s executed brilliantly makes for a good movie, but Tarot is far from it.
We do not get any surprises; everything that happens in the film is totally predictable. The ghosts even fail to give goosebumps. When I started watching Tarot, I believed it would be somewhat like Final Destination as it follows the same concept, i.e. ‘You Can’t Escape Fate.’ However, soon, my perception started changing. Elise, Paige (Avantika), Madeline (Humberly González), and Lucas (Wolfgang Novogratz) were killed by the cursed cards, and they couldn’t be saved even when their friends tried to intervene.
On the other hand, Paxton (Jacob Batalon) gets saved by his roommate Todd, who opens the elevator and prevents his death at the hand of the clown. Well, that doesn’t make any sense; how can an external force change anyone’s destiny?
In short, a ghost clown leaves Paxton alive just because his roommate arrives. That is rather a comical explanation of the events, and in fact, it undermines the deaths of other characters. I am sure if these characters are now spirits and are watching Paxton from above, they are surely wondering, “It was that easy, huh?”
Haley and Grant (Adain Bradley), on the other hand, eventually defeat the astrologer by reversing the curse on her. The Witch stops Alma, the old lady, from even lifting a finger with her ghostly powers, but she lets Haley read her horoscope, which again doesn’t exactly make sense.
For me, the movie was a tedious experience; I don’t know how it got the opportunity to hit the big screens before arriving on Netflix.
