John Legend’s New Video Has Been Shot Entirely on the Pixel 2

R&B artist John Legend recently released a new music video for his song “A Good Night” which has been filmed using a Google Pixel 2. According to a report from 9to5Google on the matter, the film crew made use of a few clever tricks to work with the Pixel 2 and make the best out of its limited focusing and depth-perception abilities.

While the Pixel 2 undoubtedly has one of the best smartphone cameras out there, its sensors are much smaller than a professional camera. In order to get the best results possible, the film crew used different lighting and a number of unique ways to rig the camera.

The report states that John Legend said that the decision to shoot the video with a Pixel 2 was because “the camera is amazing”, and how both he and his team “were fascinated by the idea of using a smartphone to film a big budget music video, a video that brings the smartphone dating experience to life.”

Legend also noted that the experience of shooting with a smartphone was “really seamless” and added that:

“We’re so used to doing everything with expensive cameras when we do these major shoots. But the experience of filming with smartphones felt really natural and the quality from Pixel was amazing.”

It’s worth noting that the team had also released a behind the scenes video which showcased the Pixel 2 at work, but the video has since been removed.

At this point, it’s probably good to experiment with it once but dedicated cameras beat smartphone cameras every time hands down.
