How to Summarize Web Pages in Safari Using Apple Intelligence

Apple’s venture into artificial intelligence has begun with the rollout of Apple Intelligence in iOS 18 beta and macOS Sequoia beta. While not many Apple Intelligence features are available for users to get their hands on, you can still get a taste of it (provided you have an Apple Intelligence-compatible device). Safari has been one of the biggest beneficiaries of Apple Intelligence feature and one useful feature that you can try right now is the new Summarize feature. Safari can now provide webpage summaries generated by AI. Here’s how to summarize web pages in Safari using Apple Intelligence.

Note: Apple Intelligence features are only available in iOS 18 beta as of now.

  • Open a webpage on Safari on your iPhone or Mac for which you want to get the summary.
  • Now, switch to Reader Mode by tapping on the icon in the address bar on your iPhone or Mac.
iPhone Safari Reader Mode
  • Then choose Show Reader under the webpage name.
  • Now, tap on/click Summarize to get the AI-generated summary of the webpage. You’ll see an animation in the new Siri colors and a text summary being generated.
  • You can choose to show or hide the summary by tapping on the arrow on your iPhone or on the box-shaped button on your Mac.

This feature summarizes text and is quite helpful in cases where don’t want to go through large chunks of block. Despite being in the beta as of now, the Summarize feature is working perfectly. One thing to note here is that every time you refresh the webpage, you’ll have to follow all the steps again to get the summary. Also, the summarize feature works in Private Mode as well.

I feel the feature would have been more useful if it was accessible without digging into the Reader Mode. Nonetheless, this Apple Intelligence feature is another handy feature like Writing Tools which is aimed at elevating the user experience and increasing productivity.
