- Offline mode is great when you don't have access to the internet or when you may run low on data.
- You can enable Offline mode on Spotify's phone app by going to Settings and privacy > Playback > Offline mode.
- On the desktop app, you can go to File > Offline mode to enable the feature.
As one of the leading music streaming platforms, Spotify needs no introduction. The Spotify app has loads of features that make it convenient to use, and one of them is the ability to download and save songs that you can listen to even when you don’t have an internet connection. However, if you don’t want Spotify to access your internet because maybe the internet is scarce where you live, here’s how to listen to Spotify offline.
Note:
A Premium subscription is required to download playlists and albums on Spotify and use its Offline Mode feature. Free users can only download podcasts for offline usage.
How to Enable Spotify Offline Mode on Phone
Enabling Spotify offline turns on the offline mode, where only your downloaded playlists show up. Spotify usually goes offline automatically as soon as you disconnect your phone from the internet. But you can turn on Offline mode within the app to force Spotify into not using the internet. It’s a great way to save data if you don’t have much data to use. Here’s how to do using the Spotify app on Android and iOS.
- Launch the Spotify app and tap your profile picture at the top left.
- Now, navigate to Settings and privacy > Playback.
- Turn on the Offline mode toggle.
How to Enable Spotify Offline Mode on Desktop
Spotify Offline on the Desktop app turns on automatically if your PC is not connected to the internet. However, if you want to force enter offline mode, here’s how to do it.
- Launch Spotify desktop and click on the 3-dots icon at the top left.
- Go to File > Offline mode. This should force Spotify into offline mode.
- To get out of Offline mode, go to 3-dots icon > File, and select Offline mode again.
This is the same across all platforms Spotify is available on, including Windows, Linux, and macOS.
Change Offline Downloads Location on Desktop
While you don’t need to explicitly enable offline mode, what you should do is specify the location where your music will be saved. To do that:
- Launch the Spotify Desktop app, click your profile picture at the top right, and click Settings.
- Scroll all the way till you arrive at the Storage section, where you’ll see the Offline storage location option.
- Click on the Change location option to change the location and let Spotify save music at your desired location.
How to Download Spotify Songs to Take Offline
Of course, the Offline mode is useless if you don’t have music downloaded. Downloading music for offline listening on Spotify is pretty straightforward.
While you could download playlists to listen to offline, there’s unfortunately no way to download individual tracks. So, if you like a bunch of songs and want to listen to them offline, you can create a playlist and add these songs to it and download it for offline usage. Like playlists, you can download albums and individual episodes of your favorite podcasts on Spotify.
- Inside the Spotify app, go to the playlist you want to download.
- Now, tap on the Download icon. Alternatively, you can also tap the 3-dots icon and tap Download.
To check if you already have the playlist downloaded on your phone, go to Your Library > Downloaded.
Similarly, on PC, click on the Downloads tab under Your Library from the left sidebar. Alternatively, if you’re not sure that you downloaded a particular playlist, you can visit it and if the download icon appears green, it means you have the playlist downloaded.
Can You Listen to Spotify Offline Without Premium?
Currently, there’s no way to listen to songs on Spotify offline without a Premium subscription. Since the Offline mode works in sync with the Download feature, you will need to subscribe to any one of Spotify’s Premium memberships to download songs on the app.
At the moment, free users can only download podcasts using the Spotify app on their devices for offline usage. You can follow the same steps as we suggested above to download podcasts on Spotify apps on the phone or desktop.
And that’s how you can enable Spotify offline and download music to listen to offline. We hope Spotify rolls out the ability to download individual music offline. Let us know what you think about Spotify’s Offline Mode in the comments.
