A GTA 6 fan account kicked off a wave of jokes across the community after subscribing to Netflix specifically to watch the upcoming GTA 6 Extended Look presentation on August 27.
X user GTA 6 Countdown showed off their Netflix subscription purchase, saying they hope Rockstar would deliver “at least half an hour of solid gameplay.”
However, the X post took an unexpected turn. The GTA community flooded the post with over 1,000 replies, roasting the fan for subscribing to Netflix just to watch a gameplay trailer that everyone will gain access to six hours later. At the time of writing, the post has also received over 1.5 million views in the past 18 hours.
User Scott F. replied, “Subscribed to Netflix just to watch a GTA ‘extended look’?” with a J. Jonah Jameson laughing gif from Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 2. Another X user replied: “The people that subscribe for Netflix just for sh*t like this are the reason this kind of dumb sh*t will happen more often now.”
Ultimately, GTA 6 Countdown’s post has become the butt of jokes. Sure, one could argue that they were just showing off their excitement for this year’s biggest video game release. However, locking a rumored 30-minute GTA 6 gameplay trailer behind a Netflix subscription is scummy, especially when the trailer will debut 6 hours later for everyone.
Similarly, user ChingChongBongles called out Rockstar’s greed, saying, “Anyone who buys a Netflix sub for this should be banned from playing GTA 6 forever; it’s what you deserve if you’re that stupid to give them your money instead of just waiting 6 hours for YT.”
GTA 6’s Extended Look, locked behind a Netflix paywall, adds to the game’s coterie of controversies. For example, GTA 6’s physical box won’t contain a disc and only a code. Secondly, fans are already calling out Rockstar’s “trailer for a trailer” approach for GTA 6’s marketing with the Extended Look.
