Does 009 Die in 007 First Light?

Yes, 009 dies in his own hideout ship in Aleph and is killed by the Blonde Assassins in 007 First Light.

After winning the auction in Aleph in one of the 007 First Light missions, James Bond and John Greenway head toward the ship where 009 hides. 007 clears all the traps and finds the opening to the main cabin. However, inside the room, Bond finds a dead 009.

Later, they investigate the body and look for other hints on how 009 died in 007 First Light. Although Greenway says it must be a result of getting killed by 009’s own men, Bond has another hunch. Right there, he locates a ship with the ‘HYPERION’ label through the telescope in the room.

This leads to the box that contains the evidence meant to be opened only by Greenway. This eventually reveals that 009 is not the main villain of 007 First Light. This leads Greenway to quit the 00 program, only to return later to save Bond in Vietnam.

Who Is 009 in James Bond First Light?

009, real name Rhys Beckett, is one of the first targets given to the 00 recruits to pin down in 007 First Light. He was a rogue agent as per the MI6 database. According to Greenway, they failed a mission called Nightfall. After that mission, 009 stayed hidden for over a decade from the eyes of MI6.

However, after 009 dies, he is shown as one of the key characters in 007 First Light, who exposed the mistakes of THEIA. It is the quantum computer that always shared wrong intel, which was later legitimized by Damien Webb.

In the ending of 007 First Light, Sir Nicholas Webb shows his true evil intentions by trying to kill Bond at the Webb gala. This further reveals that Sir Nicholas Webb and his computer, THEIA, were behind Nightfall’s failure, and that 009 was innocent.

Unfortunately, before handing out the evidence to Greenway, 009 dies at the hands of the Blonde Assassins hired by Damien Webb.
