- Game Science co-founder Yang Qi says the studio is in "no rush" to use AI to develop Black Myth: Zhong Kui.
- According to Qi, the Black Myth: Wukong sequel is in its "final stage" of design and asset production.
- The co-founder used Christopher Nolan’s work to explain the studio's current stance on using AI.
Game Science co-founder and art director Yang Qi has shared new details about Black Myth Zhong Kui, the Black Myth Wukong sequel, though not in the way you might expect. In a Weibo post on August 10, 2026, Qi responded to queries about whether the studio plans to use AI to accelerate the game’s development, saying “No rush.”
The co-founder initially took to Weibo to praise Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey. Naturally, fans also took the opportunity to ask how quickly today’s AI technology could help Game Science develop the sequel to Black Myth Wukong.
However, his response was interesting, stating that, “The design and asset-production stages will be far removed from AIGC, not out of resistance, but simply to do our best in the final stage.” This implies that Black Myth: Zhong Kui is still years away from release, as they’re at the final stage of design and asset production.
Furthermore, he used Nolan’s work to explain why Game Science isn’t rushing to use AI on the Black Myth Wukong sequel, despite the rapid technology advancements:
In today’s world where digital cinema and 3D post-production seem to have reached a dead end, Nolan is still shining brightly, stirring up a storm with older technologies… There’s no such thing as a last train that you absolutely have to catch. You can find a small hotel to stay in, and there’s plenty of time for AI and stuff, no rush.
Fortunately, this means Black Myth Zhong Kui will not use generative AI. However, only time will tell whether the developer adopts AI for its future projects. Black Myth Wukong is a massive 25-hour game that took around six years to develop. So, you can expect the same cycle for Black Myth: Zhong Kui.
Game Science has been awfully quiet about the game’s development, releasing only a non-canon Black Myth Zhong Kui In-Engine Chinese New Year special earlier this year after its original Gamescom 2025 reveal.
But with these developments, it feels like the developers will take their sweet time developing the Black Myth Wukong sequel without using AI.
