The torchbearer of this genre was Jumanji but the one movie that took it to the next level was Zathura: A Space Adventure. This movie revolves around a couple of kids who found a board game called Zathura, and as soon as they started playing it, they were teleported into outer space. The Adam Project is by far, one of my favorite sci-fi movies to date. It’s one of those movies that I can watch multiple times and still enjoy it. The Adam project revolves around the main lead, Adam, played by Ryan Reynolds who goes back in time looking for his missing wife but bumps into his younger self resulting in a heartfelt and adrenaline-filled adventure. Ryan Reynolds, as always is as charming as possible along with Walker Scobell perfectly emulating young Ryan’s charm. This is a movie you should definitely watch and once you do, there’s no going back.
4. Battleship
- Release Date– May 18, 2012
- IMDb Rating- 5.8

If you are a fan of the Navy, this movie is going to make you enlist ASAP. Battleship is an alien invasion movie that revolves around a fleet of naval battleships performing a combined annual exercise along with the navies of other countries. However, this exercise is interrupted when a faction of alien invaders trap these ships in a force field forcing them to engage in combat with them. This movie is an excellent depiction of naval warfare(even though far from the real thing) and the intensity it reaches is off the charts.

The Midnight Sky is an apocalyptic sci-fi movie revolving around the death of planet Earth due to a mysterious catastrophe that has left the planet uninhabitable. However, there is a crew of astronauts returning home after discovering a habitable planet that does not know about the death of their home.
A scientist named Augustine Lofthouse, who refused to abandon his station in the Arctic finds out about this ship returning to Earth and makes it his mission to make sure they travel back to the planet they found to save their lives even if Augustine has to give his life to do that. The Midnight Sky received rather mixed reviews, but I think this movie is worth a shot.

If you have been thinking about signing up with the Marine Corps, trust me when I say it, after watching Battle Los Angeles, you are going to sprint to the recruiter’s office. Battle Los Angeles is probably one of the most realistic alien invasion movies I have ever seen. Now when I say realistic, I am not talking about the aliens but how human defense forces retaliate against it. The combat sequences are top-notch and will keep you on the edge of your seat till the very last scene.
8. Badland Hunters
When Seoul is hit by a massive earthquake, the whole place turns into a massive wasteland. Survival is hard and people barely have anything to eat. Rim of the World is once again, an alien invasion movie but this time, the heroes are not huge mech suits or a naval fleet but a bunch of 12-year-old kids. An alien invasion leaves the defenses of planet Earth useless. However, a bunch of kids stumble upon a key that could activate a weapons system that can take out the Alien mothership. This movie follows these kids as they make their journey to save planet Earth while being chased by a lethal alien. I know that this movie does not sound that appealing but trust me, it’s as fun as it gets. So have faith in me and go for it. Trust me when I say it, it’s going to be worth it.
11. Atlas
- Release Date- May 24, 2024
- IMDb rating- 5.6
- Rotten Tomatoes- 17%
One of the most recent Sci-Fi releases saw Jennifer Lopez driving a heavily armed mech suit on an alien planet. Atlas was released quite recently and was strikingly similar to the highly popular video game Titanfall 2. This movie sees Jeniffer Lopez as Atlas who is on a mission to hunt down Harlem an AI terrorist who is hell-bent on destroying humankind with Atlas and her Mech Suit named Smith standing against him. This movie is nothing very special with a pretty generic plot but is still a movie that you can enjoy watching.
12. Oxygen
If you are claustrophobic, I would recommend you steer clear of Oxygen. This movie shows us a woman named Liz Hansen who is locked into a cryogenic chamber with no recollection of how she landed there. However, she is not alone and is kept company by M.I.L.O., a highly advanced AI. She has fragments of her memory still with her and has to figure out a way to get out of this chamber before her 90 minutes of Oxygen runs out. Will she be able to make it in time?
13. Spaceman
- Release Date– February 23, 2024
- IMDb Rating- 5.7
- Rotten Tomatoes- 49%
This recently released movie brings in Adam Sandler in a rather serious role. Initially, it might bother you a bit seeing him play a serious character instead of his regular comic roles. However, Adam has pulled off this role pretty well. Spaceman revolves around an astronaut played by Sandler who has been sent on a mission to study an anomaly. However, during his mission, he starts becoming homesick and all of a sudden, a huge spider appears on his ship and talks to him while helping him with his mental state. This movie is unique and an experience you need to have at least once.
14. Pixels
- Release Date– July 24, 2015
- IMDb Rating- 5.6
- Rotten Tomatoes- 18%
Remember that OG arcade games like Donkey Kong, Pac-Man, or Space Invaders? What if one day they come to life but not as heroes but as villains who want to take over our planet? Pixels is a movie that shows you this very scenario. An alien species stumbles upon recordings of these arcade games launched into space by humans. Those aliens take those recordings as a threat and create weaponized versions of them. When these weaponized games invade Earth, humanity turns to three guys who were arcade champions back in the day to save them from impending doom.
15. Extinction
Extinction is once again your classic alien invasion movie where a man has concurrent dreams of an invasion of which he is almost sure of happening. Neither his wife nor any of his friends believe that something like this could happen. However, eventually, the invasion does happen but the ones who invaded were not really aliens. As far as I think, the concept of this movie was not bad, but the way it was carried out seemed to be rushed hindering the overall experience of the movie. Now it’s not exactly a terrible movie, you can watch and enjoy it if you’re just looking to watch something for fun.
