Starfield is a space RPG being played by millions right now. As it goes with RPGs, it is a huge adventure that spans numerous missions and quests. If you’re one of the Starfield spacefarers, you must be curious about how long the game is and the exact number of main quests and missions. Well, we were almost through the game and had the same question, so we decided to find out. This post lists every single mission you can play in Starfield from start to end. Naturally, we have covered not only the main missions but also all the side activities and faction questlines. So, without further ado, let’s dive right in.
How Many Quests are there in Starfield?
While one might think that the main storyline of Starfield consists of numerous playable missions, the reality is quite different. Starfield, on launch, has a total of 19 main missions. These 19 missions see the players visiting various planets and searching for the artifact. Outside of the main quests, you will find three types of quests in Starfield:
- Side quests: Found while exploring the settled planets in Starfield.
- Companion quests: These are missions your companion gives after your bond with them increases.
- Faction quests: These are missions you receive after joining one of the four main factions in-game.
When you finish these curated quests, you will find procedurally generated questlines called Radiant Quests. These are created randomly after you land on a planet and depend on the RNG.

1. One Small Step
- Objective: Mine the artifact. After obtaining it, it shifts to taking out Crimson Fleet members and reaching the Lodge to join the Constellation
This mission sets everything in motion. You start as a miner, going to unearth and mine a rock. What you end up mining is the artifact, an item sought after by the group called Constellation. After a brief encounter with the Crimson Fleet and taking out their base at Vectera, we finally meet up with Constellation. This is where Sarah Morgan joins us as our first human companion.
2. The Old Neighborhood
- Objective: Retrieve the artifact from Moara
Sarah and the player head out to Sol System for the second artifact. After meeting up with an old contact on Mars, we searched for a person called Moara who had our artifact. Unfortunately, Moara goes missing near Venus. After searching and rescuing Moara from spacers, we find our second artifact.
3. The Empty Nest
- Objective: Learn the details for the next artifact at Akila City with Sam Coe
We are introduced to the ex-FreeStar Ranger, Constellation member Sam Coe, and his daughter Cora Coe. After a brief chat with the duo, we head to Akila City, where our next artifact lies. Unfortunately, what greets us at Akila City is a bank heist, which we help to break off. Eventually, after grabbing the details from GalBank and convincing Sam’s father, you will find the artifact inside the Shaw Gang territory. Promptly dealing with them provides us with our next artifact.
4. Back to Vectera
- Objective: Rescue Barrett and Heller from Crimson Fleet
We return to Vectera to find Barrett, the first constellation member we meet. Unfortunately, after our first run-in with Crimson Fleet, Barrett and Heller, a fellow miner, went missing. After some thorough detective work and rescuing Heller from the crashed spaceship, we go to Bessel 3 to rescue Barrett.
5. Into the Unknown
- Objective: Assist Andreja in obtaining the artifact piece. Then, investigate the anomaly at Procyon 3
We are introduced to the Constellation Spaceport, the Eye, and Vladimir. He instructs us to assist another member, Andreja, in acquiring the artifact. Once done, we head to Procyon 3 to search for an anomaly, which turns out to be an artifact temple and one that unlocks our powers.
6. All That Money Can Buy
- Objective: Assist Walter with negotiating and purchasing the artifact at Neon
With every companion back at The Lodge, we team up with Walter, the benefactor of Constellation, to assist him in obtaining the next artifact piece from Neon. The mission involves helping Walter to ensure that the deal for the artifact goes through properly, without any issues.
7. Starborn
- Objective: Escape the Starborns
Right after leaving the surface of Neon, we are greeted by the mysterious Starborn, demanding we hand over the artifact. Avoiding any conflict with the group, players head back to the Lodge to put the artifact back in the collection and prepare for a new threat.
8. Further into the Unknown
- Objective: Obtain pieces of artifacts from two different planets. Starborn members will try to stop you from obtaining the pieces.
We are then instructed by the Constellation to visit two separate planets. These planets are randomly generated and contain two more artifact pieces. Players will encounter the Starborn on the second planet, whom they kill to progress and obtain the artifact. The mission ends with us returning the pieces to the Lodge.
9. Short-Sighted
- Objective: Help fix the Eye
In a short mission between the bombastic ones, players visit the Eye to help Vladamir and the members fix the Eye. Once done, they prepare for their next adventure.
10. No Sudden Moves
- Objective: Obtain the piece of artifact from the Scow
Make sure you made a custom save before starting this mission. Vladamir instructs the players to visit the salvage vessel Scow, a spaceship owned by Captain Petrov. He’ll pair players up with the member with the least amount of chemistry while keeping the ones they have high chemistry with back at the Eye. This mission is one large heist mission, where players can either persuade the captain to hand over the artifact or loot it from them. Regardless of the consequences, you’ll be wanted by UC for the artifact. And this is the best time to read through our contraband guide. Additionally, going to the Lodge will immediately lock us into the next mission, with some dire consequences.
11. High Price to Pay
- Objective: Either protect the lodge or protect the eye
Right after placing the artifact at the Lodge, Vladimir informs players of the Eye getting attacked by the Starborn. From here, you can stay at the Lodge to protect the members. If you do that, the companion with the strongest bond back at the Eye dies. Alternatively, If you return to the Eye and help them out, the Hunter kills the companion with the least amount of bond at the Lodge. Regardless, players inform Vladimir, holding the artifact pieces with them, and return to New Atlantis to meet with Matteo and check the destruction left behind by the elusive Hunter.
13. Missed Beyond Measures
- Objective: Attend the funeral of the deceased Constellation member
An emotional questline, players return to the Lodge to attend the memorial of the deceased companion. Most of this mission goes into talking with people and conversing with Noel about whatever happened in the previous mission.
14. Unity
- Objective: Find the clues about Unity
Matteo takes us to meet with the Keeper Aquilus to find the meaning of Unity. This was the word spoken by the Hunter when he attacked the Lodge. This mission involves players traveling to multiple planets and finding clues about Unity. After finishing this mission, players encounter the Hunter and start the next quest.
15. In Their Footsteps
- Objective: Visit the Starborn ship Scorpius
Immediately finishing the previous mission will bring players to a new star system that reveals the location of the Starborn ship Scorpius. Here, players talk with the Hunter and the Emissary, learning what Unity is. While leaving, the players receive the key to Nova Galactic Research Station on the Earth’s moon.
16. Unearthed
- Objective: Explore the Nova Galactic Research Station and NASA
A mission that entangled with every previous mission in Starfield. Unearthed requires players to explore the Nova Galactic Research Station, searching for answers after their encounter at the Scorpius. This mission also provides broad information on how Earth became a barren wasteland. This mission also takes players to the NASA base and gives players a choice to side with either the Emissary or the Hunter.
16. Final Glimpses
- Objective: Visit the Starborn ship Scorpius
Players return to the Lodge, where Vladimir points them to the remaining artifacts. While one planet will be randomized, the other is Freya 3, which requires a better grav drive. Regardless, once we reach Freya 3, we receive a distress call from the Nishina Research Station, prompting us to help the individual.
17. Entangled
- Objective: Travel To Nishina Research Station to respond to the distress call
Players travel to Hyetta 3 to respond to the distress call from the previous questline inside the Nishina Research Station. This is arguably the only horror-themed mission in Starfield, where players are transported to an alternate reality and meet the Cataxi.
18. Revelation
- Objective: Find the buried temple at Masada 3
The second last mission of Starfield involves a lot of combat, becoming the most action-packed mission in-game. Players are tasked with visiting Masada 3, where Starborns wait for them. Depending on who they choose to side with in Unearthed, they will assist them. The mission is to find the buried temple, take the final artifact, and complete the mission.
19. One Giant Leap
- Objective: Build the Armilarry
The ending mission involves players building an Armilarry and initiating a Grav Jump to the Unity. This one plays like an epilogue to the journey, and we don’t want to spoil the ending. However, it essentially boils down to selecting two endings. Depending on which one you choose, the story changes.

Like any other RPG, you can romance the four major companions in Starfield. Upon successfully impressing them, you’ will receive one particular quest for each of the characters. These are necessary if you want to progress in impressing and romancing them.
