Rockstar Could Be Making a GTA 6 Companion App

In Short
  • According to a recent job listing, Rockstar Games is looking for a mobile engineer to work on a large-scale project.
  • Fans believe the listing is likely tied to a GTA 6 companion app, which could serve as an extension of the in-game experience.
  • Rockstar has previously developed companion mobile apps for both GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2.

In the tireless search for a sliver of new GTA 6 information, fans have been keeping tabs on Rockstar Games’ Career page. This approach has produced some interesting discoveries in the past, with the latest find being related to a potential mobile companion app for GTA 6.

The latest job post was shared in the r/GTA6 subreddit, and it quickly garnered the community’s attention. The post called for a “mobile engineer with a strong understanding of iOS and/or Android development to help us build and maintain our mobile platform, including our SDK, and build systems.” It added that the candidate will be working on “some of the most rewarding, large-scale creative projects to be found in any entertainment medium.”

When it comes to large-scale creative projects, things don’t get much bigger than the next mainline installment in the GTA franchise. Naturally, fans put two and two together and came up with a theory that Rockstar could be in the process of developing a companion app for the upcoming title. This aligns with the studio’s approach for GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2, since both games also received mobile apps that served as an extension of the experience.

In GTA 5’s case, the iFruit app provided access to vehicle customization on the fly and turned Chop into a digital pet, allowing players to feed, bathe, and water him, or participate in a selection of mini-games to manage his mood. In contrast, the RDR 2 companion app was strictly business, as it served as a handy guide for your adventures in the wild west by letting you examine the in-game map and Arthur’s journal, among other things.

What to Expect from the GTA 6 Companion App?

As such, it’s safe to assume that the job listing could be tied to a GTA 6 companion app, especially since the game’s first trailer highlighted a TikTok-style social media platform that showed off the many eccentricities of Leonida.

Depending on the level of integration Rockstar is aiming for, the app could have some useful functions that are reflected in the game. For instance, it could replicate the in-game phone’s UI on your iPhone, allowing you to call digital cabs from the real world, or manage your character’s inventory and safehouses.

It could also let players keep a handle on in-game businesses, such as those seen in GTA Online, by providing access to management options, all without touching the controller. The possibilities are truly endless when it comes to a companion app expanding on the GTA 6 experience. So, it will be interesting to see just how far Rockstar is planning on taking things.
