What Is OnePlus’ New Glacier Battery Technology?

Smartphone batteries have evolved so much over the years that now, you will rarely find yourself taking to a power bank for some extra juice. Those 5000-6000mAh batteries are already enough to get you through a day or more. However, when you’re traveling longer, even those rated capacities might not be enough. From the looks of it, OnePlus is set to change that with its Glacier Battery Technology that was announced recently.

While only some real-life testing will reveal the actual potential of this battery tech, the brand has shared quite a few impressive details during the OnePlus Glacier Battery Technology Communication Meeting. Here’s everything that you need to know about it!

Glacier Battery in OnePlus Ace 3 Pro Explained

Glacier battery in OnePlus Ace 3 Pro uses silicon-carbon anode technology which reaches an energy density of 763Wh/L. What’s interesting is that the brand claims this density to be 23.1% higher than that of standard graphite batteries

To bring this technology to its phones, OnePlus has joined forces with CATL (Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Limited). For those unaware, CATL is one of the world’s biggest EV battery makers. The primary objective behind this collaboration and the Glacier battery tech is to avoid reliance on power banks altogether and easily get around 2 days or more of battery life.

However, the rated capacity is not the highlight. This new battery tech sees the use of silicon-carbon anode technology which reaches an energy density of 763Wh/L. What’s interesting is that the brand claims this density to be 23.1% higher than that of standard graphite batteries.

In addition, the new Glacier tech-backed battery packs 6% silicon, uses Low Expansion 2nd Gen Silicon, and 4.53V Positive Electrode Material.

The brand also talks about the implementation of a new “voltage stabilization architecture” on the Glacier battery tech, which apparently ensures “consistent performance and stable, long-lasting output.” OnePlus also states,

“This high-performance battery designed for high-performance mobile phones will change users’ charging habits, relieve power anxiety, and allow more people to experience the qualitative change brought by outstanding batteries.”

More Gaming on Less Charge, OnePlus Claims

The new Glacier tech is also said to bring two hours of gaming on just five minutes of charge. The focus on gaming is always much appreciated given how low battery power has always been a mobile gamer’s biggest dread.

While you can always connect your phone to a charger and play, there’s no denying that the device heats up and even throttles in cases. Not to mention that it’s particularly difficult for gamers to hold their devices the way they usually do and game comfortably. The longer advertised gaming times are a good move if you ask me.

On top of that, the 6,100mAh Glacier tech battery on the OnePlus Ace 3 Pro can charge from 1% to 100% in just 36 minutes, according to the brand. So, this new battery tech acts as a catalyst for faster charging too, and that is a solid never-seen-before combination.

All the Capacity and None of the Heft, Apparently

It doesn’t end there though and the new Glacier battery will also be smaller in size, but still bring more backup than the 5000mAh batteries that are physically bigger. The “high-capacity Biomimetic Silicon-Carbon materials” are probably what allows the battery to be this efficient while being smaller.

This allows phones to be slimmer and yet, brings so much battery backup to the table. It’s 2024 and understandably, no one likes to carry around a brick of a phone. So, this is indeed much appreciated.

OnePlus also states that the Glacier tech brings extra longevity to the battery units, with battery health going down to just 80% in four years.

Glacier Battery Tech: Next Big Battery Thing?

All of this certainly looks good on paper. However, it is only when the OnePlus Ace 3 Pro arrives in China and we get it in India as possibly the OnePlus 13R, that we can do some testing. Those screen-on-times are certainly going to be tasty if it turns out to be all that OnePlus has stated.

From gaming to traveling longer distances and more, the Glacier battery tech makes everything seem a lot easier without having to look for your charger every now and then. However, I sure do hope that it doesn’t turn out to be something like the OnePlus 12R debacle.
